At a recent meeting of a Jewish organization, professionals were passing around the local new Chabad’s magazine. “How does the small local Chabad have a 20-page full-color glossy magazine that makes them look like a million dollar operation and we still send out black and white newsletters?”
The answer to that question turns 10 years old this year. It’s the power of hundreds of Chabad centers using the same color Magazine and a simple plate change at the printer that gives them the cover and 3 pages of local information.
Chabad should know a thing or two about publications. The history of Chabad publications in the US started in the 1940’s when the Rebbe oversaw the production of the Talks and Tales. Today, many Jewish families can point to the Talks and Tales and say that is the reason we are active Jews today.
In the 60s as the Mivtzoim campaigns took off, a magazine called “Uforatzto” was published by Lubavitch Youth Organization. Later it was called Wellsprings.
As Chabad houses became active in every small and major city throughout the United States and the world. Several Publications began to offer personalized versions for each location.
Today, the Shluchim Office’s “Holiday Magazine” is celebrating 10 years of personalization for Shluchim worldwide. Making it perhaps one of the largest publications of its kind in the world.
In the late 1990’s, Chabad of California upgraded Chabad publications with the release of the ad agency produced Farbrengen Magazine which included Hollywood stars and world famous writers.
In 2007 the Publications Department at the Shluchim Office, headed by Rabbi Avraham Green teamed up with Farbrengen Magazine and began to offer a personalized version of the Magazine, alongside with the popular Holiday Guide series, to Shluchim around the world.
With over 350,000 copies printed each holiday, the power of Chabad centers collectively makes it a powerful force in Jewish life. These publications give each location the image and the power of a collective unified force that is unmatched anywhere.
The Magazine has space for local ads allowing each center to cover the printing costs and the national edition provides corporate sponsors to have their message seen by 350,000 readers.
More and more Chabad centers are signing on each year and with over 900 centers in the United States. See the sample Soulwise Tishrei 5777 or the Tishrei Guide 5778.
