Amidst a successful first semester, the Geshem Center in Crown Heights has doubled the amount of courses they will be offering this summer and has added another department to its program.
It is now offering classroom courses on GED, Real Estate Licensing, investing and financial planning and more. While starting out in the first semester with mainly technology courses, ranging from graphic design to video production and editing, it has now added over 6 courses in this new department.
Asked about how he feels the new project is going, Rabbi Levi Kaplan responded with the following, “BH, the amount of applicants we have received is way beyond what we expected,The Geshem Center is now accepting over double of the amount of students as before to come learn in a wide variety of fields for the summer.”
Rabbi Kaplan added, “People must understand that the classes fill up quickly, and if they want to take a course, they should not wait till the last second.”
Many people from outside the Crown Heights community have either already joined the program or expressed interest to do so in the future. When asked who the new center is geared for, Rabbi Kaplan responded, “Our mission is to help Jews in job-training. Of course our first and foremost priority is to help those from our community, but due to Geshem’s high-demand, people from other communities have joined our successful program.”
“This is the real answer to the problems facing our community,” said Zaki Tamir, Chairman of Vaad Hakohol and a criminal defense lawyer, who has been instrumental in helping Geshem off the ground. “Every day hundreds of families are struggling to put bread on their table, which creates a situation of frustration and anger for the parents and families. Finally there is something viable in the community that can deal with the issue head on.”
Many prominent organizations have voiced support for this new initiative, including Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch, and the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.
Due to the generous support of private donors, Geshem was able to expand at a phenomenal pace to meet the high demands of the community at large.
