In what has become an annual tradition, a group of talmidim in Yeshiva Tiferes Bachurim in Morristown, NJ celebrated a significant milestone by making a siyum on a mesechta.
Talmidim making the siyum include habachurim hatamimim: Moshe Colon, Avraham Gottlieb, Baruch Yaakov Herskowitz, Lev Palgon, Shmuel Schwartzbard, and Chaim Yitzchak Wallach. They are in Rabbi Dovid Dick’s beginners gemara shiur, level two of four in the Tiferes program, where they acquired the knowledge of gemara terms, patterns, and background information to be able to learn gemara on their own.
“It was really special to break through a lot of their expectations, and see students who had really not learned a lot of gemara before be able to pick up not only the gemara itself, but also the skills in how to learn it,” Rabbi Dick said.
Rabbi Dick’s shiur covers significant ground while emphasizing a rigorous review schedule. Since Elul, the talmudim have learned 70 daf across three tractates—Bava Metzia, Bava Basra, and Rosh Hashanah—and were tested on their content knowledge by heart, chapters at a time.
Avraham Gottlieb, 23, from Philadelphia, PA, said his gemara skills improved dramatically through the course of the year. “The gemara learner I was at the beginning was not who I was at the end of the class,” he said. “One becomes very, very comfortable with the flow of the gemara. It’s been very exciting to develop a relationship and ‘geshmak’ in learning gemara.”
B’ezras Hashem, Rabbi Dick plans to learn through the entire Tractate Kiddushin with next year’s class.
Go boys go!
Many such Talmedie Chachomim have come from Tiferes! Chazak Chazak Rabbi Dick and all the Rabbis!!!
