Public notice from Mrs. Devorah Scheiner Yom Tov Fund:
Dear fellow Jew,
Rosh Hashana are still six weeks away in the streets here in Crown Heights you can almost touch the spirit of Rosh Hashana.
The very air seems charged. The wail of the Shofar the scent of honey cake, the white posters with thick black type calling for charity, prayer and repentance- the approach of the days of awe is impossible to miss but in small apartments scattered across the neighborhood poor families feel the upcoming holidays not only in their hearts, but also in their pocket.
The holidays mean major expenses- fish chicken meat fruits and vegetables dairy, even a new pair of shoes for their child. For poor families, preparing for a month of holidays is challenging. For widows, it can be a crisis.
There are families who consider chicken a luxury.
There is widows with 7 8 or more children with no source of income.
There are children who never wore a brand new item of clothing- or a new pair of proper fitted shoes in their life!
Mrs. Devorah Scheiner Yom Tov Fund helps single mothers’, widows, needy families and children with special needs at its annual Rosh Hashana distribution. It fills shopping carts and refrigerators and pots and pans full of food instead of a scant hungry one. It is hard for most people to understand the great need in the home of these people and families.
Join Mrs. Scheiner’s Yom Tov Fund be a partner in putting food on their table! Write your checks to feed the hungry and clothe the poor. The distribution has been helping Crown Heights families for over 25 years. I am writing today to join us in this holy work.
Mrs. Scheiner has never-ending work. Whether summer or winter she is always working, not in a fancy office with a swivel chair but, seating on a wooden chair at her kitchen table with her open books most of the day and again early evening.
She puts her health problems aside and the community needs first, every penny goes straight to the vendors where she purchases from. Her greatest reward is seeing the truck pulling up in front of her house curbside and the hundreds of boxes being unloaded. Most times she even has tears in her eyes until this day has finally come.
