A new professional family musical based on the authentic Torah story of Yosef with music written by international Jewish music superstar, Gad Elbaz, is coming next week to a theater in Brooklyn that seats 1,200 people. It’s a kosher experience for families of all ages.
Following a successful introductory run in 2017, “Yosef” the Musical returns to stage for a six show run at the Master Theater in Brighton Beach from February 24th to March 11th, 2018.
The musical is the original work of writer, composer and lyricist Zvika Bornstein and his collaborators Gad Elbaz, who worked on the musical score, and Dr. Stuart Rappaport, who co-wrote the lyrics and script and appears in the musical as Yaakov.
“Yosef the Musical is an inspirational piece that will take you on a journey and bring everything to life back again,” said Elbaz. “That alone is something I never experienced in any Broadway shows out there.”
Based on Torah and commentaries, Bornstein created the modern musical based on the timeless biblical story of Yosef and his brothers and in the tradition of the “Yosef Shpiel.”
The musical has a 30 member all male cast and was produced and directed by Bornstein, who has twenty years experience producing national Broadway tours, concerts, and music videos. The musical team is led by Gad Elbaz, Zvika Bornstein and Yaakov Spadaro and features twenty original songs and a recorded score by an Israeli orchestra.
Yosef balances its dramatic moments with comedic ones, which entertains and captivates the audience. The musical’s scenery is inspired by the Egyptian desert setting and the costumes were designed by an Israeli clothing designer based on research of biblical clothing. The scenery, music, and costumes set the stage for a classical adventure with a modern twist.
It features amazing acting, singing and choreography with dancing even in the aisles taking place all around the audience.
“When you come see the show you are going to laugh, you are going to cry, but most importantly you are going to feel,” Bornstein said. “You are going to feel the journey, it’s the journey of the Jewish people and that’s why this is a timeless story that is relevant for now as well, because what we need more than anything is unity and this story brings it home.”
