As the first yartzeit of the bochur Zalmy Pevsner (Shneur Zalman ben Yosef Yitzchok) obm approached, his friends from around the world thought about what would be an appropriate tribute in his merit.
His friends, bochurim whom Zalmy had an impact on during his lifetime, wanted to do something that was accessible for all to join, and something that Zalmy himself was involved in.
“It was difficult to choose a project, because Zalmy was involved in everything,” one of his friends told COLlive. “From Nigleh to Chassidus, to Moshiach to sichos, to mivtzoim and hafotza and Ahavas Yisroel, Zalmy was involved in them all.”
Finally, they decided on a Hakhel gathering and the learning of the Rebbe’s Sichos, something which Zalmy himself had arranged while he was studying in Oholei Torah Yeshiva in Crown Heights.
The project grew into an international effort to arrange Hakhel gatherings to learn Seder Sichos in Yeshivos around the world.
Over 400 bochurim participated in Crown Heights Yeshivos 770, Chovevei Torah, and many of Zalmy’s friends.
Other locations included 75 bochurim in New Haven; 40 bochurim in Cincinnati, 60 bochurim in Moscow, 40 bochurim in Pittsburgh, and 90 bochurim in Toronto.
