Israeli politician and staunch supporter of Israel Mrs. Geulah Cohen passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 94.
Cohen served in the Knesset for nearly 20 years as a member of the Likud and Tehiya parties.
During her time in the Knesset, she was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and her greatest achievement was the enactment of the “Basic Law on Jerusalem”, which was enacted in 1980 with a sweeping majority.
The law states that “united Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.” Together with Knesset Member Moshe Shamir, Cohen also worked to enact the “Golan Law”.
Mrs. Cohen had several hours-long one-on-one conversations with the Rebbe, and wrote several landmark articles articulating the Rebbe’s positions on Israeli security.
The Rebbe’s incisive and rebuking words on Israel’s direction and her leaders were transmitted by Cohen in articles running thousands of words. Transmitted faithfully in Israel’s most prominent newspapers, the words continue to resonate today just as when they were first delivered.
In a wide-ranging and in-depth interview with JEM’s My Encounter team, she described her pain as the Rebbe shared information and insights with her. Most prominent in these conversations were the Rebbe’s deeply pained and urgent warnings about Jerusalem.
