After a significant hiatus of approximately 25 years, the Siyum Harambam in Egypt has been reestablished. The event was organized with the blessings of Rabbi Yosef Hecht of Eilat, who had previously received numerous encouraging responses from the Rebbe regarding the organization of the Siyum Harambam in Egypt over the years.
The reestablishment of this event involved substantial effort and coordination with local government authorities, ensuring the provision of a respectful police escort. The Siyum Harambam was held in the historic city of Cairo at the Sha’ar HaShamayim Synagogue. The city of Cairo holds particular significance as the place where the Rambam authored the Mishna Torah. Notably, Israel’s Ambassador to Egypt, Amira Oren, was in attendance.
The event continued with a second Siyum Harambam at the restored Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria, featuring the participation of Egypt’s Minister of Heritage.
In addition to the ceremonies, the group visited several local Jewish cemeteries, which are the final resting places of many prominent Chachamim, including the Arizal’s student, Rav Chaim Kapusi. The journey concluded with the group davening Mincha at the Steigenberger Cecil Alexandria Hotel, a location that holds historic significance as the site where the Friediker Rebbe stayed during his visit en route to Eretz Yisroel in the summer of 1929.
Doesn’t it say that one should not return to Mitzrayim?
Allowed to visit
then your question is on the Rambam too!
He referred to himself as a sinner for it, because he lived there for a period – there are many explanations on that.
There have been many years where there was an established Jewish community there, and again many halachic justifications for that.
We are so proud of you menny, keep it up!
Please write about the people in the group that went and mor about getting into Eygept I think it will be a fascinating read.
