By Rabbi Gershon Avtzon – Cincinnati Ohio
This winter, I had a very unique opportunity: I flew with my entire family to Berlin Germany. I have never traveled overseas with my entire family before. As my wife and I are B”H both educators, and included in that is the limited budget that educators live on (an entirely separate topic..), it is not very reasonable or practical for us to indulge in such travels.
When my wife’s brother got engaged to the daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Teichtel – the Rebbe’s Shluchim to Berlin – I knew that we would have to figure something out. The simcha, and the Hachnasas Orchim of the Shluchim – was very special and it was amazing to visit the places in Berlin where the Rebbe lived and studied. While I could write at length about the special wedding, I would like to share with you part of a conversation that took place after the Chasuna.
After my children went to sleep, I went to the “guest room” to get some refreshments. In the room were some of the friends of the Chassan, who had come in from 770 for the Chasuna, and an informal conversation began. These boys are very Chassidishe boys and the focus of the conversation was that they would all like to dedicate themselves to be Shluchim of the Rebbe and be front line soldiers in the Rebbe’s army.
I turned to them and asked them, as I saw how dedicated these Temimim were, and asked them if any of them were thinking of becoming Shluchim in Mosdos Chinuch and they all said absolutely not! When I asked them why not, their response was that Chinuch is “second class shlichus” and they would like to be “first class Shluchim.”
One of them even told me a story that he heard from his Mashpia. This mashpia got married and was offered a position in a Mossad Chinuch. He went to his mashpia and asked him if he should accept the position. His mashpia answered that even though Chinuch is not the ideal shlichus, he should still accept the position because “not everyone merits to be a first class Shliach”.
Being very open and honest, I was shocked. That a mashpia should be living his life thinking that he is not a “real” shliach of the Rebbe – and even expressing that to his Talmidim – is detrimental to him and his Shlichus. I spend the next three hours trying to explain to these young, pure and idealistic temimim that the Rebbe values the dedication to Chinuch (at least) just as much as a shliach that is dedicating himself to the balebatim of his city.
[There is obviously one obvious difference between the two types of Shlichus. When one is an educator, it is much easier to forget that you are a shliach and start looking at it as just a job that you do. That is why every educator must know the answer that Rabbi Shlomo Zarchi – mashpia in 770 – received from the Rebbe. When R’ Shlomo Zarchi became Mashpia in 770, he asked the Rebbe if he was considered to be on Shlichus. The Rebbe answered that “if it is with Mesirah uNesina” – to be completely given over and dedicated to the task – then yes, this is Shlichus”.]
To me it is very clear that the Rebbe has two equal tracks of Avodas Hashlichus: 1) Shlichus in Chinuch 2) Shlichus B’arei Hasadeh. While we should be inspiring our Talmidim to dedicate themselves and become Shluchim of the Rebbe, we should not instill in them a feeling that being a mechanech is really less of a desired position by the Rebbe. This leads to the collapse of Mosdos Chinuch and the destruction of the future generations of Chassidim. Mechanchim need to be boosted and celebrated not put down and denegraded.
Every yungerman should make an honest Cheshbon Hanefesh, with his Mashpia, as to where his talents can be expressed the best and fullest in the service of Hashem. When a person is expressing and utilizing their talents, they are happier, more successful and remain dedicated to their work. If you know that you can be successful in Chinuch, don’t feel that you are not really being a “front line soldier of the Rebbe” by accepting the position.
I would even suggest that – with the hadracha of a mashpia – yungeleit should take “talent tests” to see what their true talents and abilities are. This feeling was reinforced when I saw the following story which was written by my dearest melamed: Rabbi Shmaryahu Katzen A”H.
“After I had been learning in yeshivah for a while, I felt the need to go out into the work world, but I was not sure what I should do. As was my way by now, I turned to the Rebbe, who recommended I take an aptitude test, which would identify my natural inclinations. I did so, and the test showed that I would most like to “help people.” But I was not sure what that meant in terms of a profession: Should I become a social worker? When I informed the Rebbe of the results, he said, “If you’d like to help others, you should consider becoming a teacher.“You can benefit others by teaching them love of G-d, faith, self-confidence, and love for their fellow Jew.”
Rabbi Katzen was a legendary teacher in Crown Heights that taught hundreds of children over many decades in Chinuch. He led the mesibas shabbas every week in 770 and inspired generations.
To all Mechanchim: Thank you! Chazak Chazak Venischazek!
Please feel free to share your thoughts on the above with me by sending me a personal email: [email protected]
These mashpiim or higher status people then the bochurim, I wonder are you even jewish to put people down on different levels or statutes? Some people are not even shluchim even though they are physically rabbi so and so. We are taught in chassidus if your potential is to be a shoemaker-THATS YOUR SHLICHUS! The Rebbe even told a chassid who wanted to leave his shlichus and move to eretz yisrael, “your shlichus is to stay where you are even if you want to go to Eretz yisrael.” We all have our different kinds of shlichus. That doesnt mean to… Read more »
What does this have to do with the article?
From my personal experience.
every farbrengen and opportunity Mashpiem drill it in that the only thing you good for is going on shlichus.
The further the better.
Besides of it being a big turnoff – since you tell someone repeatedly you only good for xyz.
Its wrong
The problem is these days many people go on shlichus out if pressure or for the fun of it. Both are wrong, we do it because kabolas ol to the Rebbe. If that would be the attitude, more people would get involved in chassidisher chinuch, as it is the (most important) shlichus of the Rebbe.
When reading the op-eds from Rabbi Gershon Avtzon that are posted here periodically, it reminds me of parallel universes. From his perspective, the dialogue in Lubavitch is between what type of shlichus to go on. In the world I live in (23 Year old bochur out of “the system”) the more relevant conversation everyone is having is to what extent people are commited to Yiddishkeit and Lubavitch life at all. I think this is the much more widespread and important conversation, and as long as our rabbis and mashpim are busy debating between types of shlichus, they will have no… Read more »
If inspired yungeleit would become machnchim, we would not have uninspired boy like you!
Spot on
He was addressing the article to a certain demographic and to the type of bachurim that are having these conversations.
He is right. Rabbi Avtzon writes about things that are relevant to about 10% of the Lubavitch population.
These are both important conversations, not mutually exclusive.
This is a very painful topic for many who would love to dedicate their life to doing the Rebbe’s shlichus and for whatever reason it didn’t work out for them. It has taken me decades to come to terms with the fact that our shlichus in this world is not determined by us. Hashem places us exactly where He wants us to be to perform our unique shlichus. That means swallowing the fact that maybe my shlichus in this world doesn’t involve getting the most kavod or being invited to fancy banquets, just showing up every day with bittul to… Read more »
The Rebbe didn’t use “talent tests” that would test people’s skills, strength and weaknesses etc. to send out Shluchim.
There are many Shluchim who the Rebbe sent out throughout the years whom if they took a “talent tests” testing their skills etc., the results would have shown that they belong in Chinuch and that they don’t know the first thing about running a Chabad House or relating to Chabad House type people, and nevertheless the Rebbe sent them to establish a Chabad House…
Well those who I have met are the most effective Jewish leaders I have ever encountered. I don’t know why there is all this negativity. Maybe some of you guys are jaded? As someone relatively new to this movement, you severely understate the quality with which it is run.
I belive with all the issues our kids have chinuch is the most important shlichus in our days
Perhaps the chief issue is a certain stigma, or perception that anything but Chabad House rabbi is mediocre. Never mind you’re making a million dollars and supporting the mosdos. You’ll be tolerated at best. I pick this up in the Litvish circles, which also has its own hierarchy: the ideal is kollel or rosh yeshivah. “Chinuch is also “2nd tier,” “learner-earner (part-time each) is 3rd, business or profession 4th, etc. Someone might at least have yichus. It’s sad, in a way, because all of us have our own talents to contribute to klal Yisroel. And the world needs all different… Read more »
how can any human even feel like anything more than worms and dust
Rabbi Avtzon. This is your best and most important oped to date.
The Rebbe said many times that EVERY YID is a shliach.
But in the same Sichos the Rebbe says that there are specific people who have the zechus of being sent out by the Rebbe
page number please
I have to agree that chinuch is equally as important to the rebbe as shlichus. Both shluchim and mechanchim fill vital roles in the rebbes ecosystem. I think to a buchor the thought of moving outside crown heights with the potential to one day build a community. Which is a goal with visible peiros. vs. Working in chinuch and be shown little appreciation by students, parents, and paycheck. And if it’s CH the thought of never owning your own home. I think if you offer two equally important shlichus opportunities to a buchor they would much prefer the one that… Read more »
Chinuch is not limited to crown heights
There is a huge need all over
The Rebbe said that EVERY YID is a shliach
Meaning, people have to understand that WHEREVER life brings them – they’re there on a shlichus
Whether you go into business, or education – both have to focus on what your shlichus here is.
It’s just that Shluchim and mechanchim are focused mainly on the shlichus aspect
Crown Heightser…
Shluchim have the ability to raise money needed to live go on vacations while Teachers who we rely on for our children’s Chinuch have to struggle and have NO where to raise any funds sadly so….
Agree. It’s sadly about the money too.
And Rabbi Avtzon even writes this in his own article!
“my wife and I are both in chinuch so don’t have much money….”
Shluchim have the ability to raise money and go on vacations… If you knew the pain many Shluchim go through to often stay above water, I believe you would withdraw your comment. Just wow.
A shliach is a shliach and a teacher is a teacher. 2 Diff things. Both important. Would you call the kitchen staff in the yeshiva Shluchim. They are the most important thing – Food – but not a shliach. Same with a teacher.
You don’t really make sense .. some shluchim are on payroll as well
the people who choose to be in chinuch are giving up other “well paying careers” so that they can be dedicated to be mechanech the rebbes kinder.
not the same as an accountant or a doctor.
Correct, Shluchim are mishulachim in a mem. Michanchim on the other hand, won’t stop their ovoidas hakosedh even to build the beis hamikdash!
Where does it end?
A Rosh Yeshiva? Of course he’s a shliach,
A Mashpia? Obviously.
A Maggid shiur who comes for half the day and then goes to space out at home? I guess he can still be a shliach.
A meishiv who comes to yeshiva for 2 hours a day? Why not?
A cook? He’s helping the Bochurim, a yid’s gashmiyus is also ruchniyus…
Maybe the janitor is also a shliach because he cleans up.
An additional reality is that if a shliach is successful he can earn a decent parnossah (not necessarily getting rich). As I heard from a potentially good mechanech who said that he needs a parnassah. Unfortunately mechanchim are severely underpaid and locked into a low salary. Until that changes people will have a harder time choosing chinuch.
It’s crazy, but fundraising is actually how mosdos chinuch were supposed to be also…
and people wonder why young men and women arent intersted in chinuch.
its a job where their:
underpaid
underappreciated
expected to do everything and than some
Thabk you Rabbi avtzon.
Just saying, this idea is also challenging when it comes to shidduchim.
From my experience and from hearing from my friends, the bochurim are highly encouraged to go out on shlichus, while the girls are highly encouraged to be in chinuch. The bochurim are looking for a girl who for sure wants to move on shlichus, and many girls don’t necessarily feel that need, they found their shlichus in chinuch and want to stay with that
You are on the money!!!
There’s also a third track of shlichus for those who are shayach to it. As the Rebbe directed the shluchim to Eretz Yisroel, קדימה לרבנות.
Shlihus became a family business or totally independent business.
Being teacher is a big zhus but only if you find a place that accepts and pay well, or you have a side real estate business or else, otherwise you are underpaid and struggle.
Rabbi Katzen was a real Rebbe’s Chosid, never saw anyone like him fully dedicated to the Chinuh and a mentch.
Chinuch is a very special position to be in but when the Rebbe was encouraging to go on shlichus there is no doubt that he was not encouraging people to teach in oholei torah. Not saying that chinuch is not shlichus, but there is something special to a chabad house shliach. By the same logic of not degrading chinuch because we should bolster our mechanchim, we should not bolster any idea of shlichus community or chinuch over being a chassidishe baal habos. That is a position that many must take and they should feel strong and valued for maintaining their… Read more »
I hear what everyone is saying about teachers not getting paid enough and its a huge huge problem. Both my husband and I are in Chinuch and have children in different Mosdous and we have a hard time paying tuition. We wouldn’t be able to pay more than we are already paying and I feel most families are in the same position. Tuition is a huge (but most important) expense.
So if people cant afford to pay more, what is the solution?
In things that are not a REAL necessity
“A mechanech is equal to a shliach” said the mechanech.
[I agree (or feel) that it doesn’t matter where or for what you hang up your shingle. As long as you dedicate yourself to publicly doing what the Rebbe asked his chassidim to do, you’re doing the Rebbe’s work. For me an overarching question is on the whole title Shliach, regardless of whether of a chabad house, teacher, shul rabbi, in Crown Heights, outside Crown Heights. Post 3Tammuz, one becomes a Shliach of who? How?
Thank you Rabbi Avtzon for this oped.
You definitely get the conversation going.
When either spouse goes into chinuch its not necessarily a FAMILY shlichus, where as a couple going to set up a chabad house the whole family is/will be involved.
It’s not just chatter amongst the masses that Chinuch is somehow less of a form of Shlichus, but many teachers are not recognized as Shluchim by the official Chabad organizations. Ironically the Chabad organization that is in charged of most of shluchim is called “Merkos Linyonei Chinuch” which literally means “center for the matters of education”. It is time they live up to thier name and recognize Chinuch as official Shlichus etc.
Rabbi , you are spot on in nearly all your points – however you miss a huge point causing teachers to leave the fold. That is the new age “destroy a teacher” movement brought on by all the self help frum chabad Tik Tokers viral videos big speakers large books that condemn teachers as the cause for kids downfalls and empower parents to destroy the teacher who may simply doing the best they can do. We have created a crisis Chinuch movement that has now destroyed any interest in being blamed for a child’s downfall. Instead of fixing the problem… Read more »
The article ignores the elephant in the room. “Real” shlichus gives you territory, a franchise, that you own and can give jobs to your kids. They will have jobs and live near you! THAT’S THE VALUE THAT REAL SHICHUS GIVES (AND KEEPS GIVING PERPETUALLY). Chinuch shlichus gives you a limited job, likely to expire when you are burned out, but DEFINITELY no nepotism benefits to create jobs for your kids, grandkids etc. You will work at your chinuch shlichus but won’t be able to hire your kids and leave a yerusha to your yorshim. Your kids will need to find… Read more »
if to think that you are a first class shlach helps you to do better, take it To me, first class shliach is measured according to your love ,dedication, and bittul to the Rebbe, evry Yd is a shliach, you are first class if you learn the sichos, maimorim and do your shlichus with pnimius and not pinos if you are money hunger ,you are not first class, who cares, nobody can be perfect, keep doing the best you can in your shlichus if you are not fully dedicated and miss chitas or you don’t care too much to mekarev a Yd who… Read more »
