Rabbi Levi and Devorah Marinovsky, Shluchim in Cypress, Texas, have lost their home in a devastating fire just two weeks after moving into their new house.
The blaze started as an electrical fire, but quickly escalated to produce tremendous damage to the Marinovskys’ house and all of their belongings. No one was injured in the blaze.
The Marinovskys’ 18-month-old baby was within a foot of the fire when it first started.
The Marinovskys had just moved in during January with their young children, Batsheva and Mendel, hoping to create an inviting space for the Cypress Jewish community.
The Marinovskys currently are staying with relatives, as they have lost everything in the fire.
“Nothing is salvageable,” Rabbi Marinovsky said. “Even if it wasn’t burned, it has the smoke damage and the chemicals, which can be toxic. All the clothes, all the kitchenware, everything is lost. The mattress literally disintegrated to the ground.”
While many of the items easily can be replaced, Rabbi Marinovsky said there are many pictures and mezuzot that are completely gone.
“We literally will have to buy everything from scratch,” Rabbi Marinovsky said. “We had insurance, but we won’t know until it’s over how much they will pay out. It looks like it will be a complete gut renovation.”
A GoFundMe site had been set up to help the family. The site raised more than $20,000 of its $100,000 goal in the first five hours.
Rabbi Marinovsky said he was told it will take a minimum of six to eight months, but will probably be a year before the house would be livable again.
“So, now we have to find a place for us and a Chabad House for the community,” Rabbi Marinovsky said.
