Investigators have identified and apprehended a man they say is linked to non-specific threats against New Jersey synagogues.
New Jersey officials say the threat against synagogues the FBI announced Thursday has been lifted, as they have located the individual believed to be behind the threats.
On a conference call Friday with Jewish leaders, the governor’s office, attorney general and US attorney’s office, Newark FBI Agent in Charge James Dennehy said the warning was issued Thursday against synagogues after a man had made a “credible threat” online “to attack an unspecified Jewish synagogue.”
Dennehy said law enforcement was concerned about an attack during a synagogue prayer worship, or during a school dismissal.
“We identified the subject and approached him last evening,” Dennehy told the Jewish leaders. “Throughout the next few hours he expressed radical extremist views and ideology, as well as an extreme amount of hate towards the Jewish community. It’s unfortunate that the Jewish community continues to receive these threats. We have a high level of confidence that this subject of interest is in fact the individual who posed this threat.”
On Thursday, the FBI’s Newark office issued a stark warning Thursday as it announced it had received “credible information” about a nonspecific but widescale threat to synagogues in New Jersey.
The FBI described the threat as “broad.” However, a senior law enforcement official tells News 4 New York warning the public was done in “an abundance of caution.”
