A man has died and his son remains in hospital in serious condition, following a robbery in Korosten, Ukraine.
Last Wednesday evening, Yafim Tortzinski, aged 80, and his son, Igor, aged 53, were walking near their home when they were attacked by two men.
When they tried to resist, they were both beaten viciously, so that they were subsequently taken to hospital in serious condition.
Tragically, the older Mr Tortzinski passed away a few days later, on Sunday. B”H, his son has regained consciousness.
The attackers obtained the keys to their apartment during the scuffle and ransacked the home. The police have opened an investigation, but it appears that this tragic event had no anti-Semitic motives and was simply a robbery that went badly wrong.
Both men belong to the local Jewish community and were regular attendees at the local shul. At the time of writing, the funeral has not yet taken place.
The public is asked to pray for for Igor ben Manya.
I highly doubt the robbers even knew they were jewish. They were not wearing black hats .
When I was in (a lubavitcher) yeshiva, one of the rebbiem on one occasion, explained that any attack on a Jew by a non Jew, even one that ostensibly had nothing to with religion or ‘Jew vs Goy’ issues, was still antisemitic, because deep down in the nefish of the Gentile, there was some kind of reognition of the other one being a Jew.

So tragic. I hope they catch the animals that are very likely anti Semitic as well. Just because they had a greed motive doesn’t mean that there was no hate motive as well outing the level of violence in context. I hate when we trip over ourselves to say there was no anti Semitic element in the attack. If they gave maaser of their loot to Jewish charities then you can more definitively say that greed was the only motive.
