One one of the nights of Chol Hamoed Sukkos 5778, a young man named Shea Eisenberg walked into the large sukkah in the courtyard of Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.
He sat down and joined the Chassidic farbrengen taking place there on long benches and tables. Dozens of chassidim and bochurim who present listening to words of Torah and inspiration from Rabbi Mendel Gurevitch, a Mashpia in Kfar Chabad.
Eisenberg, who is a chossid but not a Lubavitcher, said he recently wrote a letter to the Rebbe about being blessed with children. Upon placing it in the Igros Kodesh, he saw an instruction from the Rebbe to attend a farbrengen and ask for a blessing from participants.
The instruction was in accordance with the known Chassidic saying, “What a Chassidic farbrengen can achieve, even the angel Michoel cannot achieve.” Indeed, Chassidic tradition includes many stories of people who were saved by taking part in a farbrengen and being thereby blessed.
This power stems from the idea that when Hashem, regarded as our father, sees that His children are sitting together in unity and love, He is then stirred with a desire to fulfill all their requests, even those of which they would not be worthy via normal means, such as via the advocacy of Michoel, the defending angel of the Jewish people.
The participants at the farbrengen immediately began blessing Eisenberg that he and his wife should have children. The Kohanim present even stood up, placed their hands on his head and recited Birchas Kohanim.
This past week, 9 months after that farbrengen, Eisenberg emailed one of the participants: “Baruch Hashem, a daughter was born to me – Mazal Tov.”
He added, “If possible, please notify the friends who participated in the Chol Hamoed Sukkos Farbrengen with the Birchas Kohanim. Thank you very much.”
