Over the last 23 years, several thousand children have experienced the fun and exciting summers of Camp Gan Israel in Alpharetta, the only Jewish camp serving the continuously growing Jewish community in the North Fulton area in Georgia.
With the construction of the new building in 2019, most of the Chabad campus was developed into a large building and parking area, leaving only one very small sports field to serve the entire camp. The camp is led by Rabbi Gedalya and Ruthy Hertz and Rabbi Hirshy and Devora Leah Minkowicz.
Now thanks to the great generosity of the Bunzl Family, a three-acre adjacent property will be purchased with the goal of developing it into multiple fields, play areas and playgrounds for the summer camp, year-round preschool and other planned sports opportunities for children throughout the year.
“The Bunzl family have been extremely generous builders of the Jewish community in Metro Atlanta, and have been supporters of our community and camp for many years,” said RabbiMinkowicz, director of Chabad of North Fulton.
He said, “the Education wing in our building is dedicated in memory of our beloved Frances Bunzl, and now the sports complex will carry the name of the Bunzl family as well.”
The Bunzl gift will fund the purchase of the land, with Chabad launching a campaign to raise an additional $650,000 to pay for the buildout of the fields and play areas.
Another anonymous donor is matching all gifts to the buildout cost which are made during a special online crowdfunding campaign for 72 hours from July 26-28.
“We hope that the entire community will help us by taking advantage of the matching funds opportunity we have so that we can build out the sports fields and playgrounds in time for next summer,” said Rabbi Minkowicz.
