Following an initial wave of munitions on Friday night, smoke could be seen rising from Tel Aviv and explosions were heard in both Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Iran has fired “hundreds of various ballistic missiles” toward Israel, in what Tehran called the beginning of its “crushing response” to Israeli attacks on the country Friday morning.
“Moments ago, with the launch of hundreds of various ballistic missiles toward the occupied territories, the operation of decisive response to the savage attack of the Zionist regime has begun,” reported Iran’s official news agency, IRNA.
Video from Tel Aviv showed incoming rockets breaching Israel’s Iron Dome and smoke rising amid the city’s skyscrapers.
A second wave of dozens of missiles has been launched toward Israel, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said Friday night.
“The attack is ongoing. Dozens of additional missiles were launched toward the State of Israel,” the IDF said.
Citizens have been instructed to stay indoors near shelters and not to go outside.
Seven people have been “lightly and moderately injured” following the strike that hit on the border of Tel Aviv and the city of Ramat Gan in Israel, according to Eli Bin, the head of Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency services.
Israel Channel 13, citing unnamed security sources said there is “Unprecedented destruction in the greater Tel Aviv area, the likes of which we have never seen before.”
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran “crossed red lines” by firing missiles at civilian population centers and vowed it would pay a “very heavy price” for its actions.
