Last summer I had the experience of a lifetime. It’s an experience I wish for every girl my age.
Waking up with the sun and falling asleep under the stars were the beginning and end of every day at “Expedition.” Hiking the mountains and valleys, experiencing the wondrous creations of Hashem hands-on was exhilarating. Facing every challenge together, we didn’t stop till we made it to the top!
Hiking sometimes 6 hours at a time, but not giving up, made me realize I can do anything! Coming to the top of that mountain and beholding the sight of miles and miles of incredibly beautiful mountain tops surrounding me, made it all worth it.
One of the moments that stuck clearly in my mind was the day we arrived in Arizona after days in Colorado. It was a sudden change from mighty snow capped mountains to desert dry red rock. It was the moment I realized that I became so enveloped in the mighty mountains that I couldn’t imagine there can be more than that.
Davening in the serene outdoors, gave me an authentic appreciation of what it means to talk to Hashem. A friend of mine put it well, “I’ve never felt that davening could be so real and meaningful.”
The daily learning time was so enjoyable in the down to earth way the counselors taught us chassidus. I will cherish the farbrengens we had late into the night on Shabbos and the discussions throughout the day which really shaped my fresh perspective on life.
At the end of each day, teamwork was the name of the game. We were either pitching tents, organizing the van or (my favorite) cooking dinner in the wilderness! Every night we cooked up a storm. Together. No one would ever dream of having such fresh delicious hot meals in no man’s land – but we did!
And then, bonfire time. That was always special. A time to reflect, share and learn from one another. Singing camp songs and uplifting each other it truly felt like family.
Expedition changed my perspective and made me a more connected chossid. It was a wholesome and enjoyable environment on every level and a summer program that I was so lucky to experience.
Thank you Expedition!
