When you step onto the 11-acre campus of Bais Rochel Leah High School in Orange County, you’ll know you’re in a place designed for student success. The campus boasts extensive facilities—a swimming pool, sports fields, pickleball courts, and a fully furnished gym—designed to foster academic and extracurricular excellence, creating an atmosphere where students are encouraged to lead and grow.
As the newly appointed Upper School Director of Student Life, I quickly realized that these outstanding facilities are just one part of a more profound educational philosophy that permeates everything here at Bais Rochel Leah. Every aspect of this school, from its personalized guidance to its extracurricular activities, is dedicated to empowering students to unlock their full potential.
Unleashing Creativity through Production Roles
The annual student production was an event that largely showcased the transformative power of Bais Rochel Leah High School for me. Unlike typical school plays, every student plays meaningful roles in every facet of this elaborate production. They serve as directors, choreographers, costume designers, and set coordinators, directly influencing the production outcome. Despite the school’s smaller size, I was particularly impressed with the substantial investment in professional staging, set design, costumes, and music. It powerfully demonstrates to the girls how much they are valued and the significance of their efforts.
Embracing Responsibility through Chessed Projects
Through the high school’s Chessed projects, I see students embracing opportunities of kindness and compassion. These projects empower our students to make meaningful contributions to the community by volunteering as Hebrew School teachers, assisting Shluchos with outreach programs, and supporting local families. Driven by her desire to make a difference, Chana, a 10th-grade student, dedicated her Chessed hours to mentoring a young girl from the local public school—a fourth-grader bullied because of her Jewish identity. “Choosing to be a big sister felt like the right thing to do,” Chana explains. This opportunity has brought Chana a heightened sense of responsibility, “Being able to change a girl’s life and see her become happier and more confident each week fills me with immense pride,” she reflects. Their time together each week strengthens their bond over shared Jewish values and reinforces Chana’s role as a mentor, making her experience both rewarding and transformative.
Ambassadors of Light: Leadership through Brush Hour
The Brush Hour program offers a remarkable opportunity to see our students excel as true Shluchos in their own right. Here, too, they take the lead in organizing and directing events, confidently engaging in public speaking about the significance of Shabbos candle lighting, and creating powerful connections with community Jewish teens and college students. By embodying the role of Shluchos, our students inspire their peers to embrace Jewish traditions and mitzvos. The organizational, communicative, and leadership skills they cultivate are significant. This program reinforces to the girls the profound impact they can have as leaders and role models within the Jewish community and the wider world.
Integrating Values into Everyday Learning
Each of these programs—whether leading production, engaging in Chessed projects, or becoming an ambassador through Brush Hour—is not just an extracurricular program but a fundamental part of the daily learning at Bais Rochel Leah High School.
In the classroom, these experiences foster enhanced discussions, enriched perspectives, and a deepened sense of community and personal responsibility. Over just one year, I have had the pleasure of observing our students carrying the leadership skills, compassion, and confidence they’ve developed into classroom discussions, projects, and interactions. The transformative impact of the educational experience is profound. Witnessing this growth first-hand, I can only imagine the heights our students will reach after four years at Bais Rochel Leah High School. It’s a privilege to be part of their journey.
