The trial of R’ Eliyahu Hecht, a charity fundraiser from Tzfas entangled in a drug related crime, took place Tuesday in Madrid in front of 3 Spanish judges.
Hecht, a 57-year-old father of 7, told his version of how a Jew in Costa Rica duped him into taking a suitcase with drugs hidden inside.
In the last few months, he was released to house arrest after sitting in prison.
Testifying on his behalf was his employer, Rabbi Zev Crombie, director of the Tzfas soup kitchen run by Colel Chabad, for which Hecht raised funds for.
Another character witness was Rabbi Dovid Libersohn, Director of Chabad Lubavitch de Barcelona, where Hecht has been staying recently.
In his remarks in front of the judge, Spanish Rabbi Moshe Ben-Zaken gave the court background on the common practice among religious Jews to send packages to family and friends traveling abroad.
COLlive.com was told that the verdict is expected to be given “in the coming weeks.”
Until then, the public is asked to say Tehillim for Rachamim Eliyahu ben Rochel Arika.

How many more frum people need to be arrested for accidently smuggling drugs, before we realise that we have to stop????

He checked the package and saw clothes,in one of the pants sewn in were the drugs,we should never judge others,just daven for his immediate acquittal
