“Opa!”
The season premiere of Crown Heights’ iconic hachnasas orchim operation is off to a booming start. The 300-foot mega Sukkah is up, adorned with chandeliers and Rebbe pictures evoking both class and vaarmkeit; large trucks making daily visits have delivered over 100 pallets of raw ingredients, household items, and personal toiletries over the past two weeks; 30 full-time staff members are bustling in and out of the industrial kitchen, pumping out massive volumes of gourmet food and attentive accommodations around the clock.
Reb Moshe Rubashkin’s flagship mission is in full swing and bigger than ever.
Though his mega-sukkah consumes more than half-a-block of President Street, the seismic waves of radical chessed happening here are felt far beyond Reb Moshe’s daled amos. Around the world, chassidim yearning to spend Tishrei by the Rebbe know they have a home away from home when they come to Crown Heights for the holiest days of the year. No parent has to worry about their teens or young adult children spending a month thousands of miles from home–because they’ll be Orchim by Rubashkin.
The Rebbe’s care and personal interest in the welfare of the Orchim extends well beyond the annual farbrengens hosted, the maamarim given, and the many public announcements made by the Rebbe in their honor. The Rebbe’s passion for the Orchim stands as a timeless reminder to us all: these guests are precious, and their comfort must be a major and personal priority for all Anash.
Inspired by the Rebbe’s love for the dear Orchim, Reb Moshe has stepped up to adopt the Rebbe’s concern in an extraordinary way. From mid-Elul through the early days of Cheshvan, Reb Moshe and his wife Faigy turn their home into a hachnasas orchim community center for literally anyone and everyone in need of accommodations. The enormous operation has become known as Avraham Avinu’s Tent, named for Reb Moshe’s father OBM, אברהם אהון הלוי ע”ה.
It’s truly a sight to behold: unbridled hachnasas orchim powered by a l’chatchila arriber chossid–exactly as the Rebbe wanted.
Reb Moshe’s guests are the Rebbe’s guests.
Avraham Avinu’s Tent is our guesthouse.
