Please don’t compare this (as terrible as it may be) to times when Yidden were literally KILLED for teaching yiddishkeit.

It's definitely comparable

Why not. He says ‘echos’ which accommodates your concern.

This is a decree that makes Yeshiva education impossible.

This is unprecedented in the US and it is absolutely the end of Orthodox Jewry in NYS if it’s carried through with.

Not comparable but one aspect is still very simila

You are right that you can’t compare this to killing yidden but how they are trying to have control over our chinuch is strikingly similar to how it was in Russia

All draconian measures start small. We’ve all heard the analogy of putting a frog in a pot of cold water, and turning up the temperature under the pot by one degree per day. Even though it starts innocuously, if we put our heads in the sand at first, then we do not really believe in “never again.” Someone once asked the Rebbe whether the Holocaust could happen again. Unlike what we learn about the mabul, the Rebbe said, “Morgen in der fruh. Tomorrow morning.” When asked why the Rebbe was so certain about this, the Rebbe did not cite Jew-hatred. He… Read more »

The famous proverb fool me once, shame on thee; fool me twice shame on me It’s all the same agenda driven to “improve the education” Because there’s no inherent violation of Jewish law and principles to be “properly” educated After being tricked once, one should learn from one’s mistakes and avoid being tricked in the same way again. About the killed aspect while granted thank god we are not facing capital punishment for opposing government interference Yaffeed has indeed done irreparable damage to the safety and security of religious yidden Wrongly Painting fellow yidden as leeches and danger to the… Read more »

Bh the threat of being killed isn’t the case. But the threat of Child Protective Sevices removing children from the home, and having to fight that system is a very traumatic prospect for both children amd parents.

I am not a NY resident nor have children or grandchildren there but realize that this is murder – spritual murder. I am a child/grandchild of immigrants from Hungary,Germany and Belorussia who came to USA between 1980’s and early 1900’s. Poverty ment young children had to work, schools and social atmosphere promoted a “melting pot” attitude, there were almost no Rabbis to turn to. Before WWI my grandfather tried to establish a Yeshivah in our city but could not get people willing to send their sons to get the education he gave himself after leaving home as a young teenager to… Read more »

That’s why these decrees occur. It can get just as bad. Don’t be a fool. Get on the right side of history. Bringing English into yeshivas spells the end of tomchei tmimim cv. If you don’t appreciate or understand the brilliance and magic of a cheder education, at least keep quiet and let those that want this magic in their children’s lives to live in peace!!!

But there’s many more analogies in history. The Hellenists and the Romans forbidding Torah study, the burning of the Talmud in the middle ages.
The Rebbe’s explanation on וכל הבת תחיון shows that it was Egypt’s intention too.

It’s ironic that he brings but the Frierdiker Rebbe who set up an elementary school and Yeshiva high school in America with three hours a day of instruction in math, English, science and history. That’s 3 hours more secular studies than Oholei Torah currently offers.

But you they sure did not have any secular subjects in the tomchei temimin located in lubavitch.

June 1, 2022 6:36 am

Please stop with the over-the-top rhetoric. The antisemitism and mass murder of yidden over the last thousands of years is in no way comparable to your children learning English and Math so they can succeed in life. This is really getting ridiculous.

What’s ridiculous is the need to force your way of thinking on others. The decision to formally teach limudei kodesh in school exclusively is based on our deeply held religious convictions. And whatever else the children need to learn we teach in other ways. Our children get more than an adequate basic education that gives them the skills they need for life, our way of life, in school. They then apply their skills to whatever secular subjects they may need for work. It is we the parents that get to decide how to define ‘basic’ educational requirements for our kids,… Read more »

…IF and WHEN truly needed. We have graduates of the Lubavitch yeshiva system who later decide to go into a profession that involves math or science, and they learn it handily, going on to succeed as actuaries, accountants, physicians, nurses, and the like.

School is to teach HOW to learn, not to directly impart every flavor-of-the-month social “science” department’s latest teachings. Our graduates come out favorably: they know how to acquire knowledge. They learn anything (beyond their pure chinuch) that they need to learn, on an as-needed basis!

Communism advances in incremental steps. I grew up with grandparents who barely survived that horror show so know intimately how to recognize what is going on here and now for what it is. Communism.
We are unfortunately over educated about communism, will never forget nor forgive and will definitely not comply at all costs

If people really care,
June 1, 2022 7:48 am

If people really cared about preventing government intervention, they would now propose changes to the curriculum to make this problem go away.

The government wants to be busied intervening just as much as you want them to. If the bare minimum secular education was introduced in yeshivas, (similar to the bare minimum offered in Beis Rivkah) I’m confident that this proposal would get dropped.

There are people in this community who are so against children being educated at the lowest standard, that they’re willing to risk autonomy. It’s bizarre.

look at the Flatbush and modern orthodox schools, they have a full secular education and they are also a target of NYS, the problem here is not only the education, its that any one in the entire world can say that your children are not getting a good education and you (the parents) will be arrested!!! is this is not like in Russia then I don’t know what is…. there is a famous line that what’s the difference between America and Russia? the paperwork…. making ‘studies & guidelines” does not make the state right…

It is not autonomy if we can’t choose otherwise.
This problem of government overreach will not go away regardless of what we do because this government wants complete control of our children and will not stop interfering. Today it’s about one matter and tomorrow it’s the next. The buck stops here.

What you propose is not in the proposed regs.

I don't really understand all the fuss
June 1, 2022 8:35 am

The reason why the schools are in trouble is because they cut out the basic subjects that are mandatory according to NYS law.

If they would add a few hours to the day to teach them (or maybe cut out some of the wasted time in the older grades) there would be no issue.

The reason why they need to propose oversight is a lack of trust.

The schools lied to the government for years saying they were following the law when in reality they never were.

Do you actually think...
Reply to  I don't really understand all the fuss

…that public school officials truly “follow the law” but we don’t?

Ask any public school teacher, and you will see that your argument does not fly.

The law guarantees freedom of religion and medical autonomy and privacy.
The government is breaking the law by trying to force illegal dictates on how we choose to educate our kids. You don’t need to agree with how we choose to educate our kids to understand that once the government consolidates control over private school curriculum you lose too and will no longer have a say in how to best educate your children either. Get ready for the essential gender racial and climate ‘studies’ your kids will be forcefully exposed to next in the name of love and tolerance.

Legitimate reason beyond any question of doubt
June 1, 2022 12:16 pm

Those crying out for change are aware, and experienced such injustice with education that would criminalize the Lubavitcher Rebbeim. Effort and intention, have nothing to do with resulting success as issues with education are at point of the question of tearing down the entire institution.

The practical way of dealing with it may not be this, or at least what the government has currently thought through, but minimally, there is absolutely and entirely basis, beyond any question of doubt.

Hysteria
June 1, 2022 12:43 pm

The response to the new regulations is so over the top. When they were first released back in March, Agudah was much more tempered in their response because they understood it would not impact Yeshivas that provide basic secular education.

Only about a month ago, under pressure from the Chasidish yeshivas that don’t want to make any improvements, did this suddenly become the worst thing since the Holocaust.

As a parent I can assure you that we know what happens when we give an inch of our autonomy to this criminally corrupt govt, they’ll take a mile. They do not have our children’s best interest at heart. We are all still very angry about being forced to comply with the chicken pox, flu and hep b shots that our little kids don’t need and we don’t want or they get expelled by Dec 31. It’s outrageous. Every medical intervention carries risk and the school is not a medical facility that should interfere whatsoever in our kids medical business.… Read more »
