Rabbi Motti Feldman and his son Menachem Feldman of the Dover Heights Shule – Beis Menachem Chabad in Sydney, Australia, filmed a cover for the song “Ochila” as Elul inspiration for their community under Covid lockdown.
“We have chosen to sing this song in the midst of lockdown,” Rabbi Feldman told COLlive.com about the song originally composed by Hilel Palei.
Rabbi Feldman said that it wasn’t natural to be in a shul with no congregants. “(We are facing) restrictions and limitations that we have never experienced before,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said he is preparing for Yom Tov “knowing that G-d is with us,” adding that “In the darkness, we will find meaning, faith and strength.”
The song gives expression to that hope.
“We pray that G-d opens our mouths in song. We ask that we find inspiration to pray to G-d, in whichever way he sees fit that this should take place,” he said. “May we all merit to sing joyful songs, praising the deeds of our creator. Shana Tova to all. With blessings for the ultimate redemption-Amen.”
