Real-estate mogul Shalom Ber Drizin is pitching in to help newly-married Kollel students in Crown Heights for the Pesach holiday.
For the third time, Drizin is offering the 130 Kollel members to subsidize their traditional Chassidic dress – a black fedora hat and a sirtuk (or kapota) frock coat.
A year or so after their wedding – before leaving on Shlichus or finding a job – many Lubavitch Kollel members find themselves in a tight financial situation as they receive modest stipends for their learning, even when combined with their wives’ salaries.
As the cost of living rises and the global crisis clouds the financial outlook, purchasing a new hat or sirtuk can be a challenge. The average price for a Borsolino hat is over $150 and for a sirtuk $400 and up.
The value of Drizin’s donation this Peasch is estimated at $50,000, COLlive was told.
“Drizin buys the hat directly from Italy and the kapotas from Canada,” a source said.
In charge of distributing the goods are Eli Slavin, Noach Fox and Kollel member Shalom Ber Klein.
thanks col for the article
he should be blessed in these hard times to help out and to give there should be besuros tovos!!
yes it is a intersting choice alot of them have a kapote they just got married might be goodf for someone else “misplaced” though is a strong word
Your point is well taken.
HOW EVER, those who do little or nothing to help people pay their bills, complain when other give for other items. And those who give for kapotas and hats do give for other things…….
But to answer your “Sheiles R….”
There are plenty ungeleit in killer for three years plus….
The Groh.
someone else used to give (or still gives) a suit and hat (and shoes?) to israeli bochurim for tishrei (or was it pesach) so this guy is following suit (pun intended). but yes, i tilt towards #11 – perhaps imagination or creativity together with this wonderful gesture might have served kolel people better. matza, wine, food, wife gift, baby needs, etc
Don’t yungerleit just married have a nice hat and kapote that lasts 3 yrs or more… this money could help subsidize their rent, food and other staples and/or a crib etc.
wondering if this money is not misplaced. wonderful thing and can’t complain – but misplaced.
smoking?
why did chitrick not give? they have gelt
Ashirus!!!!
Beautiful!! Once more Mr. Drizin opens his heart/wallet!!
