Chabad of Rural Georgia, founded 8 months ago by Rabbi Chaim and Chayala Markovits, held their first public Seder this Pesach. The Shluchim describe an unexpected guest that showed up:
Moments after opening the door for Elijah the Prophet and in the middle of singing the beautiful songs of Hallel at the Seder, a tall, broad man, with a Harley Davidson leather jacket and a loud Bronx accent barged into our ballroom and announced, “Is this a Passover Seder? In Macon?! Good Yom Tov!”
We were surprised to see a Jewish person who randomly found us!
After the excitement calmed down and he was enjoying hot roast and potato kugel, David shared how he grew up with a traditional Jewish family in New York. His grandparents lived blocks from 770 Eastern Parkway, the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s synagogue, and he used to visit the Rebbe on Sunday for dollars very often.
We asked David what brought him here, and he emotionally shared that he was adopted at a young age. He recently discovered his biological family and after fifty-three years he traveled south to meet his siblings.
Having just finished spending the day with his sister and her family, he checked into the nearest hotel which brought him here.
David knew it was Passover and he was missing his usual Seder experience. From the lobby he heard the sounds of Hallel being sung. Surprised by these familiar melodies he followed the noise down the hallway that led him to our ballroom, the Chabad of Rural Georgia’s Public Seder.
Just imagine how surprised everyone was, including David! He joined our Seder and with tears in his eyes turned to us all and said, “Thank you for being here tonight. Nothing is by chance. G-d directed my path. Chabad is exactly what I needed tonight. Thank you!”
