‘Don’t Look Directly at Sun’

Jews who at dawn on Wednesday observe the once-in-28-year Birchas Hahama should not look directly at the sun, as gazing directly for even a few seconds at a sliver of the brilliant star can cause irreversible damage to the retina, Prof. Anat Loewenstein says. Full Story

Stupid? Why stupid?

I have been practising sun gazing, like thousands of people all over the world, for health and spiritual reasons for many a year, looking directly at it at sunrise and sundown for five minutes and intermittently for a few seconds during the day. My vision is completely unaffected!!! It has, however, brought tangible health benefits. That’s why somebody would want to look at the sun.

STUPID!!!

Why would you want to look directly at the sun? All you are doing is killing of parts of your eye little by litte! And you can never get these parts back!

The sun is not changing by birchas hachamah..so it’s just like looking at the sun on any other ordinary day!
The guy either doesn’t know what he’s talking about, or what birchas hachama is!!

People look at the sun all the time, especially at sunset.
For Birkas HaChama, we’re not talking about staring at the sun – just looking for a moment (like at Kiddush Levana).

you don’t need to look at the sun for more than a moment. you can use a filter of sorts, but it is important to look at the sun directly, a reflection of it does not suffice. The health warning is important, but the advice at the end is not acceptable in Halachah!

thanks

You are suppose to quickly glance at the sun before the blessing. Which is something which happens inadvertently almost daily, so I can’t see why there should be any problems with it.
