The new school year in Ashkelon, Israel began this week under the shadow of numerous rocket attacks, and fears of what the future has in store.
A large part of the first day of school was dedicated to emergency drills in the case of missile attacks.
The school’s staff and children practiced repeatedly to ensure that everyone reached the protected areas within 25 seconds.
After much practice the goal was reached.
The school year started with a minimal amount of complication, despite the fact that there were many obstacles getting everything ready as a result of the security situation.
“Tthere has been considerable growth in the number of children studying in the Chai Schools, thank G-d,” related Shliach Rabbi Menachem Lieberman, “with the student body numbering about 1,650 children this coming school year.”

We had the privilege of visiting several of the schools that Chabad Lubavitch runs in Ashkelon. Rabbi Lieberman and Rabbi Ochayon do an incredible job providing education and Yiddishkeit opportunities to children who may otherwise have none. They do an outstanding job with utter mesirus nefesh. May you continue going from strength to strength.
With much admiration,
