Rabbi Mendel Slavin, a Shliach in San Clemente, CA, had placed an order on the Kosher food delivery service PrimeNosh.com, and was awaiting his meat order, which was scheduled to arrive by UPS the next morning.
3 cases of meat were meant to arrive before 10:30 AM this morning, but to his dismay, they did not arrive on time.
Upon calling customer service at Prime Nosh, they discovered that the address had been auto-corrected, and instead of his address, a random address had been inserted with the order.
Prime Nosh contacted UPS, who informed them that they would need to submit an address correction, and the order would be delayed. Since it contained meat, “it was obviously a hassle for me,” Rabbi Slavin said.
The people at UPS did say that if he is able to track down the driver and the truck which has his package, then he can meet up with them and take it from there.
So Rabbi Slavin began to search, and after reaching one guy who was not the driver, he managed to track down the correct driver who had his package in his truck.
Rushing to meet the driver on his route, he met up with him while he was talking to another person.
The driver said he remembers the Rabbi from his home, and realized the address was not correct, but he couldn’t remember where he lived, the driver said.
As Rabbi Slavin retrieved his package, the man who the UPS driver was talking to struck up a conversation with Rabbi Slavin, and he said he lives in S. Clemente as well, and is familiar with the Chabad Center.
He is Jewish, he said, and mentioned that he wanted to come by a few times to the Chabad Center.
Turns out, he had never put on Tefillin before in his life.
So right there in the parking lot, Rabbi Slavin helped him put on Tefillin for the first time and he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah.
Rabbi Slavin also gave him Challah for Shabbos, and they agreed to stay in touch.
“Hashem sent my package to the wrong place so I could put on Tefillin on this guy,” he said. “And now I have met another Jew.”
