Chabad of Delaware is raising funds to rebuild the Chabad Center at the University of Delaware, which was torched by an arsonist on Tuesday.
Investigators revealed that a devastating fire that broke out at the Chabad Center for Jewish life that caused heavy damage was intentionally set.
The center is run by Shluchim Rabbi Avremel and Shulie Vogel.
“We are deeply pained by the willful destruction that took place at the Chabad Center at UD yesterday with damages of at least $200,000,” Rabbi Vogel told COLlive.
“Fueled by a deep sense of hate and a can of diesel, a tortured soul set a Chabad House on fire,” Rabbi Vogel said. “This space was not just a synagogue, it was a home. It was a safe space for hundreds of beloved Jewish souls at the University of Delaware in Newark,” he said.
“The Chabad Center is where students came to feel embraced, accepted and loved,” Rabbi Vogel said. “This was the space where they felt anchored amidst the stormy days of college life.
“And now this place is a pile of ashes, darkened by black soot and the smell of smoke.”
Vogel says that the students are shaken to the core by the fire.
“They feel so brokenhearted, lost and confused,” he said. “Their home, their lighthouse, their sacred space is now gone. Because of hate, malice, darkness, and evil.”
“Please join us in telling each and every one of the Jewish students in this small college town that ‘AM YISRAEL CHAI! WE WILL PREVAIL! WE ARE STRONGER!'” asks Rabbi Vogel.
“With your support, we can remind them that the Jewish people are all one big family and we are stronger together. We will show them that when we are knocked down, we become stronger, prouder, taller,” he said.
