Dedicated Yeka Counselors Light Up Ukraine with Winter Camp

Amidst the backdrop of the heaviest bombardment since the onset of the war, a group of Chabad Bochurim returned to Ukraine to run Camp Yeka’s winter program on the outskirts of Kiev, providing much-needed respite to young Jewish underprivileged children affected by the war.

The winter camp, organized by directors Levi Berger and Mendel Borodkin, featured an array of incredible activities, trips, and programs designed to uplift the spirits of the campers, creating a warm environment of Yiddishkeit.

On August 31st, Ukraine endured the heaviest bombings since the start of the war. Yeka counselors swiftly led campers into bomb shelters for over 7 hours. Igor, 13, from Dneper, reflected, “At home, rushing to shelters is lonely, but in camp, our energetic American Vozhaty make it fun – singing, dancing, playing games, even in difficulty.” Head Counselor Mendel Goodman emphasized Yeka’s essence, stating, “It’s about bringing light to dark times, allowing our boys to connect with Hashem and the Rebbe, knowing they’re never alone.”

As the campers laughed, played, and learned together, they formed unbreakable bonds with their counselors and peers. The everlasting impression of Camp Yeka will stay with them forever helping them grow in their Jewish identity.

With camp drawing to a close the boys boarded buses to return to their villages across Ukraine where the Shluchim take care of them, they were filled with renewed strength, inspiration, and joy to carry them through the next few months until Yeka returns.
