The tri-state area is bracing for another stormy afternoon Monday, hours after booming thunderstorms roared into the region, dumping torrential rain in spots as loud thunder caused at least a few people to jump inside their homes.
A heat advisory will be in effect through 8 p.m. for most of the New York area. The combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees.
Most of the city will stay dry Monday morning, with temperatures feeling dangerously close to 100 degrees — and no real relief will come until the end of the week. Storms are expected for Monday’s evening commute, but they look to become more widespread Tuesday as a disturbance passes through.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.
