On Sunday information obtained by Cyprus Police resulted in dozens of policemen surrounding the Chabad Center of Cyprus for more than 4 hours.
40 cars with Palestinians were planning to protest Israeli operations in Gaza. Police isolated and secured the area to keep the protesters away.
This case is the latest in a string of recent incidents of this type in Cyprus. On Chanukah, 2 Chabad Menorah-cars were damaged by stones thrown at them, and two 4-meter-tall Chabad public Menorahs were found totally destroyed in one of Cyprus’ biggest cities, Limassol.
The incidents continued during the last week, when eggs and stones were thrown at the Chabad building in Larnaca, and suspicious people, appearing to be Palestinians, were found walking around and peering into the Jewish Center’s premises.
A British-Jewish couple, who were on their way to Chabad to pray on Friday night, complained that they were threatened and insulted 2 blocks from the Chabad Center.
“As Shluchim of the Rebbe, we have the obligation to continue spreading light to the Cyprus Jewish community, even in these circumstances. We are adding in security measures, and have requested assistance from local security officials and specialists,” said Rabbi Arye Ze’ev Raskin, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Cyprus.
if chabad doesnt wake up soon and realize they are the official representation of the jewish people things will be difficult
the time is up!
no more is the small shliach putting out gefilte fish on a tuesday a guy doin his thing
we as an organization should wake up and realize we are all the public face and bastions of judaism and effectively embassies of the jewish communities everywhere
