The Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, has long been exemplary with its hachnosas orchim, with residents opening their homes to guests around the year.
As the home of the Rebbe’s Shul and Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters, Crown Heights is where people come to see Chassidic life in action and experience an authentic Shabbos in a welcoming atmosphere.
The groups that are hosted begin with the thousands of guests who come to celebrate “Tishrei with the Rebbe.” They come before Rosh Hashana and remain until Shabbos Parshas Bereishis.
Quickly following that are a slew of Shabbatons organized by various Chabad organizations that bring people of all ages to the neighborhood. The accommodations and meals are often provided by locals.
The following list was compiled by a COLlive reporter, calculating all the larger gatherings with guests. This doesn’t include the ones privately organized by individual Shluchim, schools and other mosdos.
Naturally, this list also doesn’t include the guests that come for various simches such as weddings, l’chaim engagement parties, Bar Mitzvahs, and Bris Milahs.
Reviewing this list, one can easily appreciate the open hearts that lead to open doors by residents of the Rebbe’s neighborhood. Or, as the Rebbe called it, kan tziva Hashem es habracha – Hashem has blessed this area.

We are grateful to the Crown Heights Community! Real role models for hachnasas orchim and unlimited chessed!! It is so so inspiring and we are so grateful to you!!
community who makes events. If you make more events on days when driving is permitted, more people will come. almost Everything doesn’t always have to be a shabbaton, on shabbos.
Incorrect. The opposite is true! It being on shabbos encourages more ppl to come and really get involved without distractions
am much more likely to go to events that are not on shabbos. i like to be at home on shabbos.
Don’t forget Tishrei, when Crown Heights hosts thousands of guests for more than a month.
You forgot to mention all the Israelis that come for chanukah, tons of groups come from Israel chanukah time. You also forgot to mention the weekly shabbatons run by release time program, that we host campers and counselors. And they make a camp on chol hamoed pesach too and come with counselors.
In Tishrei, or more accurately, from Chai Elul through Shabbos Bereishis, the community hosts thousands of guests and between Eshel, the Vaad and Rubashkin, they raise well over $2,000,000 to pay for the needs of the guests.
Living anywhere in his proximity has become a living nightmare for so many reasons.
And all year round
Let him find indoor space somewhere and not torture his neighbors
People down voting this comment aren’t the ones living in proximity of Mr Rubashkin. I don’t view what he’s doing as anything bad, he’s providing real support for people visiting in a real way. All that said, I have a friend who is a neighbor of his, and the quality of life is affected because of the way it’s currently set up. And I do believe that there are ways to make it less disruptive to the neighborhood, while continuing to do what he does. It really sucks to have to deal with the garbage, the noise, and other factors… Read more »
Doesnt include what CH residents and families personally spend hosting for Tishrei. Its way way more when you calculate that.
The $2 million amount cited earlier that the major CH organizations raise for Tishrei guests does not include the personal expenses CH residents and families spend to host just for Tishrei. It would be interesting to figure that number out. Tishrei alone can be tens of thousands of dollars for a family that hosts.
Wrong info.
Ckids shabbaton doesn’t happen in crown heights
This year it will be in crown heights
This year they are thinking of doing it in ch
This year it will be in CH

But I would think it would be more
It is more. Tishrei, all the smaller communities coming in, bar mitzvah, engagements, weddings and bh many more Simchas.
Many people come in as well for Chanukah and Shavuos
כן ירבו

That’s about 17 ‘events’ a year.
Said different of 52 weeks in a year it’s 33% of weeks.
+ Shluchim who bring in groups individually & the days before/after camps.
incredible people live there absolutely incredible people
so good for the economy
you missed the point
We are so greatfull to every family who hosts guests, not forgetting about kids who give up their beds.
and a big thanks to everyone who makes the guests feel so welcome.
Kol hakoved
It’s incredible to see how many people come to CH to see Chassidic life in action and experience an authentic Shabbos. There is also so many L’chaim’s and weddings that take place in CH with neither side being Crown Heightsers.
Crown Heights continues to be the driving force for Chabad worldwide after more then 80 years since the Frierdecker Rebbe chose the neighborhood to be the center of Lubavitch.
We need to expand 770! There are so many people and they just can’t fit. This is desperate!
But that’s not in crown heights?
Another round of hosting…
There are also many weeks that thousands of bochrim and Anash come to CH, including Tishrei, Yud Shevat, Yud Alef Nissan, Gimmel Tammuz, and to a lesser extent, other Yoma Dipagras as well
I have to say that rabbi Rubashkin is a tzadik and opens up his home
However there are many others who made these many events into a money making business which they charge extremely high prices for lodging and it’s been a source of income for many so it’s also of benefit to the community. Surely there are still families that host but this is the vast majority
instead
There are also so many organizations that help many people. I’m sure there are many that people are not familiar with.
The Rebbe would be proud
however everyone should understand , it is very costly. yes its a beautiful mitzvah hachnosasos orchim, which falls on the MOTHERr who has children, older children, and ainiklach.EITHER you are a tired working mom, or a tired working Grandmother (who has done it all her life). YES, AND BH FORSIMCHOS IN CH. LCHIAM, WEDDINGS, BAR MITZVAH,FAMILES IS BH COMING. SHABBOS TABLES OR 25 TO 20 PEOPLE. WE ARE NOT FUNDED BY OUR CHABAD HOUSES WE PAY A FORTUNE IN RENT OR HOUSING … AND YET WE HAVE TO SMILE AND EVERYONE WHO COMES IT IS ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT TO… Read more »
would be nice if some of these programs had an element that involved residents. its always us giving up our houses, shul, schools and streets, only to be pushed to the side and essentially asked to stop existing for a few days while everything is given to our (now bi-weekly) guests.
All im asking for is a thank you from the organizers and perhaps a little acknowledgment of the fact that we’re being constantly asked to give up everything to a point that its become systematic
Adding all other events when thousands of people come and need accomodations
Chai Ellul
Yud tet Kislev
Chanuka
Yud shevat
Yud aleph nissan
Lag baomer
Etc etc
we must really thank the woman, because they make the hachnosos orchim happen
zg
i think you mean women, plural. unless you are talking about one specific woman who does all the hachnosos orchim
come on , stop you know it was a typo
Each of these brings a ton of money to Crown Heights by supporting local vendors, rentals, food establishments. Millions of dollars
Does the Rebbe want his shluchim and bochurim coming in every two seconds or does he want them focusing on their communities and local needs. Not sure the answer, but what we do know is that Hashem put some of us in CH to live and the rest of us all over not be in and out of CH rather to visit a couple times a year. Especially given the size of our out-of-town contingency now, the fact that some people come 10-20 times a year is wrong. When others come a couple times, the hosts are exhausted or unavailable.… Read more »
