Couple Wants Local Canadians

Rabbi Tzali Borenstein welcomes residents into his home

When Rabbi Tzali Borenstein was asked to arrange a Hanukkah Menorah lighting ceremony for local residents last December, he had no idea what kind of response it would generate.

Having recently arrived in Whitby, Ontario, from New York, the Rabbi had heard about a growing number of Jewish families in the region but wanted to see it for himself.

“The response was very good,” Rabbi Borenstein said, who chose not to advertise the event and instead let the news spread by word of mouth.

“Over 60 people attended and many were interested in more Jewish events and activities here in Durham.”

This led to the Chabad of Durham, a new centre Rabbi Borenstein and his wife Chana are opening at their home to welcome all members of the Jewish community, regardless of their background or affiliation.

“All are welcome (and) no membership is required,” said Rabbi Borenstein.

“The centre will serve as a source for everything Jewish and a home away from home for the entire Durham community.”

Some of the services that will be offered include weekly adult education programs, youth and holiday programs, the Jewish Women’s Circle, Mommy and Me sessions, and special programming for Jewish teens.

“The whole concept of loving and respecting one another, no matter what your ideas and your views are, is a very important concept,” said David Schaeffer of Pickering, who is looking forward to the opening of the centre.

“I salute Chabad of Durham for fostering that idea.”

Both Rabbi and Ms. Borenstein were globally involved in Jewish education before choosing Whitby as their new home and have extensive experience in educational and religious activities.

“We look forward to offering a stimulating, kid-friendly Jewish education, designed to inspire Jewish pride and awareness,” said Ms. Borenstein.

A grand opening of the Chabad Jewish Centre of Durham takes place Monday, June 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 3 Glenmount Crt. in Whitby. Light refreshments will be served.
