The large crowd at “The Power of Unity” concert at the majestic Kings Theater in Flatbush, Brooklyn, got to be part of a special and moving moment on Sunday night.
The Jewish music superstars Dudu Fisher and Gad Elbaz, who headlined the show, cleared the stage and made room for a white chuppah to be set up and a Jewish couple to take center stage.
The groom Pesach Charni and bride Avigail Chazin were said to be descendants of Holocaust survivors. They agreed to share their special day at the concert which highlighted Jewish survival and continuity.
For people in the crowd, it was a fitting continuation to the evening’s opening of a guest appearance from the Holocaust Survivor Band, recently returned from their first-ever trip to Poland since World War II.
The concert’s director Daniel Finkelman told COLlive.com before the event: “I don’t know of many events where so many communities will get together under one roof like this one. During the event, we are planning a big surprise that will blow people away.”
He said the show will also highlight “the multi-generational strength of the Jewish nation, which draws on the wisdom and tradition of its elders to empower and enrich the youth, torchbearers for those who will follow in their footsteps.”
Elbaz, the Israel-based celebrated singer, accompanied the groom and bride as they took their places under the chuppah. Officiating was Rabbi Aryeh Katzin, Executive Director of the Russian American Jewish Experience.
