U.S. Congressman Ritchie Torres, a Democrat who represents New York’s 15th congressional district, paid a visit to the Chabad House of South Bronx, led by Rabbi Choli and Chana Mushka Mishulovin.
As a staunch supporter of Israel, Torres has visited the country and has encouraged fellow politicians to partake in similar visits.
During his visit, Torres was warmly welcomed for lunch at the weekly mincha service and learning session. It is held amidst the bustling activity of the Bronx courthouse, where many Jewish attorneys and law clerks work.
In a candid interaction, Torres addressed a wide array of local and federal questions. He shared his concerns about the nine Congress members who voted against supporting the Iron Dome to defend Israeli citizens from terror rockets.
Torres, a strong advocate for Israel and a vocal opponent of anti-Semitism within the Democratic party, expressed his heartfelt dedication to the Jewish community,
“Jewish men died fighting for black and browns like me during the civil rights movement,” he said. “How can I not fight for them?” He further discussed his recent trip to the holy land of Israel, humorously recounting instances where he was mistaken for an Ethiopian Jew.
When the topic of his political aspirations arose, Torres mentioned that his path to leadership might well lead through the Senate, amusingly pointing out that at the age of 35, he still has 40 years to become eligible for the presidency.
Participants were grateful for the visit. Jonathan Abramovitz, a local prosecutor and resident of the South Bronx, commented how if it weren’t for Chabad South Bronx he wouldn’t have a local Jewish community.
Rabbi Mishulovin remarked that he envisions a future where he could proudly say, “The Jewish community experienced a resurgence in the South Bronx under the tenure of Rep. Torres.”
