Today, the House voted to approve the Covid-19 relief bill, paving the way for President Joe Biden to sign his top legislative priority into law.
House Democrats passed the legislation on a party line vote of 220-211. No Republicans voted in favor. One Democrat voted against the bill: Rep. Jared Golden of Maine.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said today that Biden will sign the bill on Friday afternoon at the White House.
Passage of the bill marks the first major legislative achievement of the new administration and a Congress that is now under full Democratic control, with narrow majorities in the House and Senate.
Key features of the package include:
– Up to $1,400-per-person stimulus payments that will send money to about 90% of households (Use this calculator to see if you’ll qualify for a stimulus check.)
– A $300 federal boost to weekly jobless benefits
– An expansion of the child tax credit of up to $3,600 per child
– $350 billion in state and local aid, as well as billions of dollars for K-12 schools to help students return to the classroom, to assist small businesses hard-hit by the pandemic and for vaccine research, development and distribution.
– Extends a 15% increase in food stamp benefits through September
– Helps low-income households cover rent
What happens next: Psaki said, “The bill text will be rechecked, printed, and signed by the appropriate leaders in the House and Senate.” The House clerks will then deliver the bill to the White House for the President’s signature.
After Biden signs the bill, the turnaround time — between it being a more than 600-page bill and money in people’s pockets — could be relatively quick.
People could start seeing the $1,400 stimulus payments hit their bank accounts within days of Biden signing the bill.
The payments do not all go out at once. Those whose bank information is on file with the IRS would likely get the money first, because it would be directly deposited into their accounts. Others may receive paper checks or prepaid debit cards in the ma
President Biden praised the passage of the American Rescue Plan moments after it passed the House on Wednesday and vowed to sign it on Friday.
“This legislation is about giving the backbone of this nation – the essential workers, the working people who built this country, the people who keep this country going – a fighting chance,” Biden said in a statement.
Time to make it rain #biden2024
How did you like it when they constantly obstructed Trump’s attempts to provide stimulus and other relief and tried to divert billions earmarked for US covid relief to unrelated ’causes’ like gender studies in mexico and the philipines?
Yayy
Of course. Because davka the money that makes a big life or death difference for people -members of our community – that’s the national debt.
The overwhelming majority of the money that’s going for boondoggles, or for the Palestinians to commit terrorism, or other useless or harmful things – that’s the national debt. Think of it: 1.9 trillion divided by 380 million US citizens should come to $5000 per person, not $1400. So yes, you should be upset that $3600 of what should be going to you is instead being stolen for those other purposes.
This is why I vote for Democrats, my party actually looks out for our citizens. Thank you Biden and Harris!!!
What about the $1800 during Trump’s presidency? You know, $1800 is more than $1400. Which would mean, by your logic, that Republicans look out for the citizens more than the Democrats do.
So, kudos to both: the Democrats and Republicans…
That’s why they are raising the gas prices.
Because they care so much.
His Royal Majesty has condescended to grant you largess! (Of course, you’ll be paying for it in one way or another.) Pay no attention to the fact that the great majority of it is going for all kinds of wasteful and harmful boondoggles, and that by rights, 1.9 trillion divided among the entire US citizenry would come to over $5000 per person, not $1400. But be grateful for the crumbs you receive!
As an American citizen and American essential worker (Bass on a 40 hour week, with 2 days off. Shabbos & Sunday) we couldn’t get stimulus checks before Covid-19? It has to be now?
Let me explain the simple way how it works. When getting stimulus checks from government our income tax gets raised. So that means when we get our regular weekly or/by weekly pay check we will come out with less income, as (lots of us) are getting stimulus money from our government. JSo now our income tax are gonna be greater then usual……..
How pathetic is that??????
