Smoking is a habit that cuts across all spectrums of the frum community. Cigarettes have the best hechsher out there that everyone accepts. Smokers puff away at a farbrengen while discussing the intricacies of the Creator and what He wants from us. Outside of shuls after davening, congregants gather to smoke and chat.
Motzoei Shabbos, a pack of cigarettes is shared amongst desperate smokers “dying” to have their first cigarette in 25 hours. The message to teens and young adults is very clear: smoking cigarettes and being a frum jew fit very well together.
On the younger side of the spectrum, an unsuspecting 12 year-old takes his first puff in an alley to see what it is like. Younger girls start smoking to look older and cooler when hanging out in places they shouldn’t. Groups of secret teen smokers find a little crevice to smoke, away from disapproving eyes.
The purpose of this article is to encourage young people – and adults – to think a little more about cigarette use and what it does to the body. We also hope to look at some sad facts about the frum community and smoking. If you are offended by this, just stop here, but if you want to know the facts, read on.
“It helps me relax in social settings.”
“It calms me down.”
“I fit in better with the cool kids.”
“It helps me control my appetite.”
“It helps me think deeply about Torah.”
These are just some of the countless excuses that young people use to justify. Most don’t ponder the negative effects it has on them, nor what it is that they are really inhaling.
Health Hazard—Cigarettes Kill
What are some of the wonderful additives in cigarettes? Here are a few of the 4000-plus chemicals found in them, as well as some other places they are most commonly used:
Carbon Monoxide—Car Exhaust
Nicotine—Pesticide
Ammonia—Floor Cleaner
Arsenic—Ant Poison
Hydrogen Cyanide—Poison
Methanol—Rocket Fuel
Formaldehyde—Preservative for Dead Bodies
Nitric Acid—Fertilizers, Explosives, and Dyes
Naphthalene—Moth Balls.
Tar—Material for Paving Roads
Get the picture!? Who in their right mind would willingly smoke after pondering what is in cigarettes? That is why tobacco companies are not divulging what cigarettes really are, and efforts by others to force them to inform the public have run into billion-dollar walls of legal battles. The result is increased danger to smokers. By the way, those same companies are spending huge sums of money in advertising to ensnare teenagers whom they know are very easy targets.
Insidious for Teenagers
In all walks of life, smoking is something that teens start for many reasons, almost none of them related to the physical desire to have a cigarette. Having a desire to smoke is about as natural as putting your mouth over a car’s exhaust pipe. Who would subject himself to this? Teen curiosity, defiance, sense of adventure, wanting to be “cool” and fit in, creating an image, stress relief, and following in the footsteps of friends and family who smoke are some of the reasons why young people first start to smoke.
By nature, a teenager is striving to define himself and where he fits in this world. All teens experiment with different forms of self-expression, but cigarettes are often a little more than they bargained for. The process of nicotine reaching your brain from the bloodstream after being inhaled into the lungs takes 7 seconds, faster than shooting heroin directly into one’s arm R’L. It could take as little as 4 weeks and less than 100 cigarettes to become addicted to nicotine.
The rate of cigarette users who become addicted to nicotine is higher than alcohol, and even higher than crack cocaine! Around 2/3 of teens smokers report that they want to quit smoking and even more say that they would not start smoking if they could choose again.
The lack of urgency to quit is a big problem for teens as they usually are more interested in short-term satisfaction as opposed to longer-term vision and goals.
Quitting smoking is not the easiest habit to break; it may actually be the hardest. Since teens do not like to fail, they can be easily discouraged from stopping in the face of such a difficulty.
The effects of smoking are less pronounced when you are young, even though they are still very present. The saying goes, “When you are young, you think you are invincible.” Teenagers and young adults have incredible physical resiliency. They can recover from fatigue, injury, and heavy activity much faster than adults. Despite this, most teens have already experienced some of the ill effects of smoking:
Shortness of breath
Increased illness, including bronchitis
Susceptibility to colds
Excessive coughing
Yellow teeth
Worse, smoking can affect a youth’s lung growth and ability to function properly. Studies show that teens that smoke are more likely to use alcohol and other drugs, have high stress levels, and engage in different forms of rebellious behavior, ranging from violence to truancy and much more. If teens continue to smoke as they move into adulthood, they have a much greater risk for developing heart and lung diseases as well as various cancers, including lung and bladder cancer. 1 in 3 teens who continue to smoke into adulthood will eventually die of smoking related causes.
Cigarettes in the frum community
What a sad commentary on frum communities that there are known individuals and places where young people can purchase cigarettes both for good prices and without hassle. There is very little distinction made by these frum black-marketers about their clientele, as long as they pay in cash. These places aren’t seedy, underground establishments; rather, they may be your local shul or yeshiva. The salesman may be considered as part of that establishment.
Another favorite spot for young people are bodegas where loose cigarettes are sold at late hours accommodating the night owls that can’t find a pack at those times.
Rarely are these individuals or establishments held accountable for their actions. We are either indifferent or don’t think we can change the situation. The result is that for a young person in the frum community, it is way too easy to get a hold of a cigarette.
The Elephant in the Room
Cigarette addiction avoids deep scrutiny sometimes because it does not destroy families or individuals. It doesn’t cause people to do crimes or act irrationally in the way that alcohol or other drugs do. It isn’t even viewed as a drug.
But today, medical facts scream out that tobacco-related disease is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in the US and worldwide. Every 48 hours, 2,400 Americans die from smoke-related products – that’s like a 9/11 attack every 2 days, 183 times per year – and that’s only in America.
There is the sad story of the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous who died in his fifties of lung cancer. While he was busy staying away from alcohol, he was smoking several packs a day. Simply put, nicotine addiction is a very real and tragic public health crisis.
As a community, we need to take a longer and closer look at cigarette use among young people as well as adults. Our complacency is a big part of the issue. Below are some suggestions how to tackle this issue.
Summary
Cigarettes are extremely detrimental to one’s short-term and long-term health.
Cigarettes are full of poisons and toxins, and cigarette companies spend billions of dollars every year to downplay this fact.
Nicotine is highly addictive, and the addiction is extremely hard to break.
Teenagers in the frum community are generally unaware of the above facts, and there is a lack of will and effort to educate them about cigarette use.
Teenagers do not see the urgency to stop smoking because the damage caused is not immediately seen.
It is too easy for teenagers to get cigarettes in the frum community.
Take Action
Accessibility—as a community, make efforts to control how much access young people have to cigarettes.
Role Models—stop the complacency! Our actions should not give smoking a stamp of approval for young people.
Dialogue with Teens—Conduct open and honest dialogue with young people about cigarette smoking and the dangers it poses.
Encouraging Efforts to Quit—Create a support system through which young people can be assisted when trying to quit smoking.
Get Healthy – Find a healthy alternative form of expression.
Most of the statistical information in this post is taken from the American Lung Association Website. We encourage readers to do some research of their own as there is a wealth of information out there on this subject.
And I’m really scared, he’s so young! sometimes I wonder where he even gets them from, but then I remember, it’s not hard. No offense, this is like the most basic of basic introduction to smoking, and does not give me any advice on how to even approach it with him, with him being open to receiving. I see it as one of two ways: 1. You can try the scare tactic. that is “you will contact so and so disease'”(G-d forbid) personally I don’t think this works. 2. Another approach is the “it’s not G-dly approach. Good luck. You… Read more »
As a mother, I wouldn’t want my daughter dating someone who smokes either. And to all you Bochurim who say you will stop for your wife, why don’t you stop now? Why wait for your wife to stop you? You are missing out on an opportunity to meet some good girls… A good girl does not want someone who smokes, Not just for the potential dangers involved. It also shows a lot on the charachter of the bochur. He is obviously not a happy, stable boy if he felt the need to start smoking L’chatchila. It’s not so cool after… Read more »
in seminairies they tell girls do not go out with somone who smoks.
in those days, they didnt know that smoking wasnt heathy!
They smoked simple pipes, which contained not much more than plain tobacco. None of the nicotine, chemicals, or other things meant to addict the user.
Great comment! Every word is so true!
We live in a scary world today. It seems every time you turn around, there is another study coming out which shows how something else that we enjoy is not healthy for us. Don’t eat salt… it will raise your blood pressure. Don’t drink alcohol… it will lead to traffic accidents, domestic violence, vitamin deficiency, and liver failure. Don’t smoke marijuana… it will lead to amotivational syndrome. Aren’t there any vices that we can enjoy in all good conscience anymore? In truth, for just about everything we enjoy in life, there is some study which tells us why it is… Read more »
Don’t make an excuse to smoke, its dumb. Its your Yetzer hara talking, do what hashem wants… Be his Chussid not the Cig’s.
A great guy who smokes occasionally ?? Are you kidding?
Those who start smoking in this day & age when we know how dangerous smoking is have issues. These could be ADHD, low self esteem , very low intelligence…
What exactly is great about that?
Everyone talks of cancer but it’s not only that. How about:
Lung disease
Artery blockages
Infertility
Liver cancer
There’s more…
I’ll pass on the occasional “great guy” smoker any time, thanks.
Someone finally has the audacity to speak up against smoking in the frum community and you are whining about it???! So very sad.
i quit (5 years ago) when my wife got pregnant which was after 9 years of smoking two packs per day. I wish I had role models who concentrated their efforts in my generation to educate us to quit smoking–or to not start at all.
P.S. I used Zyban and it worked perfectly. Good luck to all those “Quitters”.
#3 – people who smoke are using cigarette as self medication, try Ritalin it’s safer & more effective.
Yeshivas should not employ anyone who smokes.
I would never consider a smoker as a shidduch for my kids either, no one wants their daughter to become a widow.
I have seen this first hand.
I will not let anyone smoke near me either, second hand smoke is just as dangerous.
The notion that “the Rebbeim smoked” makes it ok. The facts of smoking were simply not well known. If you look in early poskim they talk about the benefits being “shovoh lechol efesh” which is why it’s allowed on Yom tov.
Obviously we now know that there are no health benefits.
It is a shame that chareidi rabbis don;t come out and say it’s ossur. If they can forbid internet why can’t they forbid smoking????
i am a lubavich girl and all i can say is that i have no respect for any rabbi or person that cannot hold themselves back from this cravings because what about the mitzvah to watch ur health??? THIS KILLS THE HUMAN BODY. and it kills other along with you. it shows that your craving comes before hashems comandment to watch ur body, cuz if u cared enough u wudnt be doing something that KILLS your body- its just a matter of time
the reason people smoked than and it was fine was because they didnt know how bad it was.
40 years ago people did not know that smoking harms one’s health. But now a days there is NO EXCUSE. Teachers, Rebbis, parents any one who smokes take heed there are people out there willing to help you quit. For the sake of the next generation get help.
Schools should get involved, speak to the students while they are young and explain the dangers why one should not smoke.
Hatzlochoh
I’d like to reiterate what a previous poster wrote. The sentiment you are about to read IS FACTUALLY repeated in every Chabad House the world over. Frum smokers turn off people from Yiddishkeit. Here is what was written: people have to be careful because i have a friend who is becoming frum and when she saw a bachur smoking on Kingston she was shocked and said” when my dad sees people like this, it makes him not want to keep Shabbos, because he says that the Torah says to take care of your health and here they are smoking!!!!” so… Read more »
– If, we get more and more smoking-bashing articles like this (thank COL for this important article), – If we had Rabbonim (from multiple segments of the frum world) at the very least state that it is wrong to start smoking, – If we convinced shuls, stores and every other public place to ban smoking in their buildings, we might then create the appropriate sense of derision towards smoking. Of all segments of the modern world, it is the frum world is one of the (if not the) most behind on this subject. Create a environment in which PEOPLE FEEL… Read more »
I second the other Allen Carr user. An amazing book. Highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about quiting or knows anyone who is considering quiting. Will change the way you think about smoking forever.
the minute they heard that cigarettes are not healthy that instant they(the rebbe and the frierdike rebbe) stopet smoking and 2. torah “chasa al mamon israel ” IT COUST ALOT OF MONEY
“Tobacco is the only legally available consumer product which kills people when used entirely as intended.”
-The Oxford Medical Companion, 1994
It’s so annoying when people use the ” this is frum/not frum” argument to prove their personal issues. “smoking is against the Torah” or ” smoking is not not Kosher”. This is a human issue- to have a better quality of live (cheaper and less ilness) and to live longer don’t smoke. Smoking is not immoral- other things are!
The Rambam writes quite disparagingly of those “whose belly extends…”. He considers it a trait for boors and ignoramuses. We know that it will kill you. For the sake of your children, if you have any or plan to have in the future: don’t smoke, eat healthy and exercise.
What of the story that the Rebbe smoked Lark cigarettes at one time? Also nonsense – or was it before the nesius?
whoa whoa! take it easy mrs.! don`t think you`re gonna manipulate your children in every way you would like to. it`s kind of extreme to say what your saying. I mean, maybe there CAN ACTUALLY be a great guy who smokes occasionaly! does that make every other part of him “disgusting” and “smelly”?!? what if your own child is a smoker and you don`t even know about it?? (which is actually the case with most young smokers)!! maybe you should start being a little more sensitive to people who smoke, and not just exclude them from the category of human-beings… Read more »

second hand smoke kills as well!!!!! so if you smoke and you dont care about the effects on yourself, have concern for your family and friends and dont KILL them!!!!!!!!!! Its not fair to those who want to live, to have to suffer everyday when they walk down the street or leave their house, because every person they walk by is smoking. (how long can we hold our breath for already. )
Stop spreading a lie I have not heard from one reliable source about the Rebbe smoking. What we heard was a rumor that in the early years there was smoke seen in Rebbe’s room. Non of the Rebbe’s mazkirim (secretaries) verified this rumor or other people who were around those days. Stop spreading this foolish rumor. And to #29: In previous generation many things were done because of a lack of awareness or scientific findings. In these days when we all know the undisputed fact that smoking is dangerous for out health, there is no reason whatsoever to touch a… Read more »
excellent, informative article! its about time, this is brought open to our open community! I wonder what you expect our bochurim to say when they see their own magid shiur walk in the street and smoking????? very mixed message. please parents talk to your children about how bad it is to smoke. you be surprised, our children hear what we are saying and in the end they will thank you for this important message.
OMG some1 plz tell me that’s not true?!!?!
First of all I applaud you for speaking out against a terrible habit, and especially loved the anecdote about the founder of AA dying from cigarettes. I am concerned about your lack of details when you say the salesmen of cigarettes are in the Shul or Yeshiva and you dont explain. You also make it sound like this is epidemic of these places by your omission of detail. I do agree however the religious world seems to lack education in the area of healthy living. Yeshivahs should have curriculums that include the dangers of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes from a… Read more »
Stop the Machlokes in Crown heights, that is a bigger problem.
don’t use the word Kosher or not kosher when it comes to cigarettes because you are misinforming people of the use of kosher as far as food and other things are concerned, Great Rebbe’s smoked in the last generation so don’t say that they used some thing not kosher.
You are absolutely correct. The next article should be about the problem of obesity in the community. Smoking and obesity are two of the largest contributors to the decline of the standard of health in our communities and society as a whole. Maybe with some education (or at least awareness) we can help overcome these dangerous hurdles.
🙂
are you kidding? smoking is an avaira, you are knowingly harming your body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Smoking cigs is actually a very “frum thing to do”. I’m a bt and when I was in public high school, all the guys thought smoking cigarettes was disgusting and now, I see teenaged boys all over CH smoking thinking it’s “normal”. Of course not only frum people smoke but the heading of this article isn’t quite true.
I agree with this article totaly!
I have made it clear to my own children that smoking is a filthy disgusting smelly habit, and that I will not accept anyone as potential shidduch material who smokes for my children, and would likely seek to find out of others, including their parents smoke, and that would definatley impact on any and all shidduch considerations
BS”D
suggested to take a Vit B injection to support the breaking of the habit. it worked. Vit B – it was a mega B if i remember.
Have to say i was sooo relaxed for about 2 weeks. awesome.
p.s. cigarettes are a seriously disgusting habit. when you give it up, you cant stand to be anywhere near them.
…if only there were tzniusdik gyms… Related, much of the diet (in addition to us being sedentary most of the time) is cause for concern – high fat, high sugar, high carb… high everything (including large portion sizes) and minimal physical activity/exertion. We’re not burning off all the energy we’re taking in.
Also, all the snacks/noshes/desserts we buy premade… full of processed and artificial chemicals (check out the ingredients in most parve “treats”) …Altogether, a recipe for diabetes and further tzuris. LaBriut!
denile ain’t just a river in egypt and from many of the responses to articles on this site re addiction one can see that there’s an awful lot of denile by us.
…why create a new burden against your life by taking up smoking? Don’t even put your kavanah on cigarettes, and just tell yourself “It’s not for me”… like treif. Don’t we already have enough bad habits to work on?! Don’t become a slave to cigarette addiction – don’t give into satan. Focus your energies and time on mitzvot, ahavos Yisroel, and Hashem, instead of on an object that takes your money (that could be used for tzedakah), your time, your energy and health, and robs your focus away from life, mitzvot, and Hashem. Thank you for discussing this issue among… Read more »
That was the Freidiker Rebbe.
And since when is smoking “chassidishe” #3?
i think the article answers its own question, people dont realize the effects immediately and therefore dont think it harms them…
well… its time to wake up and smell the coffee… SMOKING KILLS!!!!!!
Benzene is also a ingredient you forgot
smoking is suicide.
A much needed and well written article, may these efforts to stop smoking bring much success and good health to all
(you didn’t mention effects on people from second hand smoke, which could also cause health problems) and a most disturbing sight iis to see a father pushing his child in a stroller and smoking at the same time
AlanCarr’s Easyway method is the best way to stop smoking. They have a seminar with a money-back guarantee if it doesn’t work.(They are the only tobacco cessation orginazation to offer such a guarantee!) He has also written a book called The easy way to stop smoking which has sold over a million copies. http://www.theeasywaytostopsmoking.com/
Didn’t the Rebbe and all other Rebbeim smoke too?
tel that to the generations of chassidim whom smoked over the years
what a stupid way of trying to get an anti-smoking message out there
to # 3 drinking coke is a unhealthy habit and it shouldnt be used so often but it DOSENT kill
SMOKING DOES
unfortunely some people dont take it serious till its to late
and dont say at least ill enjoy life because in the end im going to enjoy life more than you for not smoking those disgracefull paper rolls filled with
CARBON
MONOXIDE
NICOTINE

How about the expense?
Yasher Koach for finally writing something that is so necessary and important. It is utterly ridiculous that anyone would smoke in the frum community. And to #3, I hope the next article is about the issues of health such as obesity and sodas and all the other problems in the frum community. Perhaps you have heard the phrase “guard your health?” well take it to heart. What a complete chilul Hashem that we have rabbis walking around speaking about the importance of G-dliness as they are significantly overweight and not doing the first thing to take care of their G-dly… Read more »

Cigarettes Kill Thanks you for bringing this important issue to the masses. Unfortunately, there is a new wave of young teens that are beginning to smoke because of the “cool” factor. Then they are hooked! The cigarette companies add these additives precisely to addict people to smoking. The young people think that they are invincible and they can stop at any time. Easier said than done. I think all preteens should visit a cancer ward in a local hospital to see the results of smoking. Newsflash! Smoking IS NOT cool. Smoking = Cancer = Death. Living a long healthy life… Read more »
This is amazing
theres something called an e-ciggarette its run on batteries and its not full of chemicals its ‘healthier’ and has cartridges with all diff types of tastes and has nicotine free ones aswell its helped many people attack this terrible addiction in a healthier way google it!
That’s the headline of the next op-ed coming to town. I mean come on! I can bring you the dangers of doing just about anything enjoyed by many and conclude that oh, its so unhealthy it cant be a jewish habit! Why do you have to come out against smoking which in addition to being a Chasidishe thing to do is also something enjoyed by so many frum jews !? Upset and perplexed.
Finally someone dares say something about that plague that is killing hundred and maybe thousand of people around the world every single day..
Actually nicotine was BANNED years ago as a pesticide because it was too dangerous. I had a bottle – the word POISON took up half the label!
