Dr. Tal Nir, a Lubavitcher chossid, was named as one of the 12 best family doctors in Israel for 2020, it was announced on Monday night.
The Danieli Prize for medicine is given to an outstanding medical professional voted by 317,000 members of the country’s health maintenance organizations. 12 were voted out of 5,500 physicians.
Dr. Nir is a resident of Nachlas Har Chabad in the southern city of Kiryat Malachi has been practicing for over 40 years in Kibbutz Chatzor Ashdod, near Gan Yavne.
The doctor is known for his personal care and availably around the clock. But he is also known as the chassidic doctor who happily dispenses spiritual tools in addition to prescriptions.
“He brings my matzos for Pesach and on Rosh Hashana he comes to give blessings,” one of his patients said. “He has become a kind of personal therapist for me.”
In an interview this past week in the Kfar Chabad Magazine, Dr. Nir said he sees his practice as one that treats patients in all aspects and said he sees his work as a “medical shlichus.”
“The Rambam taught us that a good doctor should not only be treating the body but also the soul,” he said. “The soul has an integral part in the healing and healing process.”
He said he does not have an established approach on how to help the neshamma of his patients.
“I do it with sensitivity and gentleness and our of great love and real care, as the Rebbe instructed us,” he said. “With each patient, I act as I see what fits. From one I may ask to put on Tefillin or place a Mezuzah on the doorpost of their house. From another, I ask to put a coin in the tzedaka box. Not everything is suitable for everyone.”
Dr. Nir commonly hands our Shir Hamaalos cards for new mothers and he says they happily hang it in the carriage.
In response to his win, Dr. Nir said: “My patients deserve this prize because it is their choice. Hashem is the healer and I am only the messenger, a conduit to pass the medicine to the sick. Hopefully, this conduit will continue to be hollow and not full of pride. We need a lot of modesty in medicine.”
