Eight Nights. Eight Leaders. One Community.
This Chanukah, the CHJCC is honoring eight extraordinary individuals whose leadership, sacrifice, and quiet heroism helped shape Crown Heights into the community we cherish today.
Each night, as another candle is lit, we reflect on a different leader, each one a flame who lit the way for others.
Honoring Rabbi Yosef Baruch Spielman
During some of the most turbulent and defining moments in Crown Heights history, Rabbi Yosef Baruch Spielman stood at the helm of the CHJCC with strength, clarity, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. Serving as Chairman in the early 1990s – through the Crown Heights riots and the difficult years that followed, he carried the weight of communal safety and stability with remarkable resolve.
He is known for his steady leadership, firm advocacy, and behind-the-scenes diplomacy, working with government agencies, law enforcement, and community voices to ensure that Crown Heights remained protected, respected, and united. His efforts helped diffuse tension, foster communication, and uphold the dignity of our neighborhood during moments of immense pressure.
His legacy continues to guide the work of the CHJCC every single day.

Rabbi Speilman deserves this honor. My group Crown Hts Women worked with Rabbi Spielman and the Vaad HaKol after the Pogrom and they were very professional and supportive of our community and efforts.
May we be spared any repeat of those terrible times.

Thank you Rabbi Spielman for all you did as Director of the CHJCC and even today together with your wife on providing the Pantry
