In response to growing concerns about new sanitation rules recently announced in the neighborhood, the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) is reaching out to residents for input.
Many residents have expressed frustration over the new regulations, which prohibit placing trash outside for collection before 6 PM. This has been particularly problematic for those observing Shabbat, as Friday night collection often falls before Shabbat begins.
Recent reports of homeowners receiving tickets for putting out bags too early on Fridays have further exacerbated the issue. As sunset times approach earlier in the year, this problem is expected to become even more pronounced.
In response to community complaints, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has claimed to have offered to switch collection days for affected residents. While community representatives do not recall such an offer being made, the CHJCC believes it may still be possible to implement this change if the community is in favor.
Switching collection days would mean that all areas with Jewish residents would have their last collection of the week on Friday. This would allow residents to place their trash out on Thursday night, avoiding the current restrictions. Additionally, it would enable residents to bring their cans back onto their property after collection, instead of leaving them out until Motzei Shabbat.
The CHJCC is now seeking input from residents to determine whether this proposed solution would be beneficial. Community members living west of Brooklyn Avenue who currently have Monday, Wednesday, and Friday collection have reportedly expressed satisfaction with this arrangement.
To gather feedback from the community, the CHJCC has created a survey. Residents are encouraged to complete the survey to share their thoughts and preferences regarding the proposed sanitation changes. You can find the survey by clicking here: chcentral.org/TrashCollectionSurvey
Regarding the Tickets:
The CHJCC understands the frustration surrounding the tickets issued for violating the new sanitation rules. We are working diligently with community leaders to advocate for the dismissal of these tickets. Unfortunately, at this time, the tickets have not been dismissed. The CHJCC will keep the community updated on any further developments and the city’s response.

The CHJCC encourages residents to stay informed and engaged with this issue.
My husbands not well and I’m a elderly women, this time of having to bring the trash to curb is really not working for me, it’s hard enough to get the trash outside, how am I supposed to bring my trash to the curb?
On Friday we accumulate the most garbage. To have it sit till Monday is not a good idea
You will put it out Sunday night, instead of Monday night, it makes even more sense.
What happened to government FOR the people, by the people? Where is our taxpayer $ going? Mainly to biased disproportionate ticketing, Placing drug shelters, migrant centers directly into our community against the express wishes of all the residents, placing half blocked of Citibikes where we need parking most, almost no attention to the rampant and serious crimes against our community.. the list goes on.
You bring up valid points, and with housing prices increasing millions of dollars in the last 3 years, Crown Heights is becoming less and less attractive, to a point that my wife and I, who have been head strong on staying in CH for years, are now rethinking our stance.
The rents are also getting out of hand and it is becoming more and more apparent that our community lacks any proper leadership.
Other communities like Williamsburg don’t put up with all this garbage.
Tishrej collect every single day and some areas twice a day. CH full of guests piles of garbage to collect, we pay enough and JCC can do simple task to eliminte trash in the area.
Putting trash bags out??? Garbage needs to be put out in lidded cans. The rats love the plastic trash bags. They chew through and have a good “meal” from the garbage inside. Please stop feeding the rats and use lidded cans!!!
I simply don’t understand why there isn’t any big containers. Why would you put garbage bags outside. Especially when it’s windy, it’s simply not good. There should be big bins on every street where people could dispose all their garbage and the garbage collectors should emty those every week.
That’s the system they have in many countries and city’s.
I am looking forward to the new, giant trash cans that will soon go into effect as this will hopefully alleviate NY rodent issues. However with the cans, the city MUST put out jillions of bait traps since the rodents will no longer have the mountains of trash bags on the sidewalks and, to avoid starving, will try to go into houses.
Regarding the new sanitation schedule, it would be very much appreciated, thank you!
whose buying them? how long will they last infront of your house before getting stolen. i use to have a few cans, with my address on them. they are long gone…..
In most cities the city provides the big garbage cans, if we buy they just get stolen. If garbage pick up is monday morning then it should be picked up early in the morning. Many times the garbage just sits all day waiting for pickup. 6 or 8pm is too late to put out garbage. The rats will come anyways if we put in out garden or on grass earlier waiting for the 6 or 8 pm. I got a ticket, fought it, sent pictures and video of the officer giving the ticket and trying to decide if he should… Read more »
