On Friday, Erev Shabbos, FREE of Brighton Beach welcomed a beautiful new Torah scroll just in time for Shavuos. The Torah was bestowed to FREE of Brighton Beach by a generous anonymous donor in memory of his father.
The donor told Rabbi Dovid Okonov that though he was not personally from a Russian background, he specifically chose FREE as the home of the Torah after being impressed by the extensive services FREE offers the Jewish Russian Community of Brighton Beach.
As per the donor’s request, a modest dedication ceremony was held with the participation of the students of Mazel Day School, directed by Rabbi Avremel Okonov.
The children were very excited at the unique opportunity to accompany the brand new Torah as it was carried into the synagogue by Rabbi Hershel Okonov. They said p’sukim and had the chance to kiss the Torah. Many of the children then returned on Shavuos day for FREE’s annual Shavuos Ice Cream Party to hear the Ten Commandments read from the new Torah.
The Torah will be used on weekly basis for the daily minyan.
