It’s been a busy first day for the 825 girls attending the Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos in Crown Heights.
Finalists from around the world descended upon New York, ready to begin the legendary weekend of fun and excitement that the Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos has become. They were divided up into eight teams: “Yad Hachazaka,” “Sefer Hamitzvos,” “Peirush Hamishnayos,” “Moreh Nevuchim,” “Sha’alos U’teshuvos,” “Iggeres Harambam, “Perek Echod L’yom”, “Shlosha Perokim L’yom” and given ID cards to match.
Head staff welcomed each participant with packages full of goodies and Chidon sweatshirts. Counselors greeted their teams with warm smiles. “It’s such an achrayus to have these chayolim in my charge,” says division head Goldie Wolowik. “They’ve worked so hard to get here!” Each of the finalists representing their schools needed to pass three qualifying tests to be eligible to join the Shabbaton.
After a satisfying breakfast, students in grade four and five took the final test in Beis Rivkah, while grades six through eight traveled to Split Rock Resort and took thier tests there. This test is the determining factor of who won a gold, silver, or bronze medal. “I’m proud of all the hard work, even if I don’t win,” says Simi Itkin, a contestant from Kingston, New York. We wish all of the Chayolim Hatzlocha and look forward to updating you throughout the entire Shabbaton.
