Decades of recorded historical information, dedication and devotion kept – and still keep – the Jewish flame alive in Manhattan’s nostalgic Lower East Side.
Despite the strange surroundings, with new languages and challenges, they pulled through – with blood, sweat and tears – to keep Shabbos, and with unwavering Bitachon in Hashem, kept his Mitzvos faithfully and raised their families with those strong values. The “pintele yid” and yiddishe spirit really came through as they founded and upheld vibrant shuls and communities, set aside times for Torah learning and the education of their children.
The media’s recent exposure of the unfortunate arson at its historic Beth HaMedrash HaGodol – built in 1850, a city landmark – highlights the history and traditions which are still so prevalent in this famous “corner” of the Big Apple, in its shuls, mikvaos, eateries and other points of Jewish interest.
Leading it will be Rabbi Zalman Goldberg of Crown Heights. He says the tour will be an inspirational walk to capture (and get the inside scoop of) the unique sights and smells of New York’s Jewish community of yesteryear.
Flavored with fascinating anecdotes of the personalities and families who walked these streets, he will talk about their triumphs and tribulations. “Hopefully, you will be spurred on to do more and overcome our challenges today as well,” he says.
In partnership with Gray Line, the popular red double-decker sightseeing agency, the Jewish angle of the Lower East Side will now receive an authentic and insightful voice and focus, through an experienced educator and lecturer.
