For the past 25 years, Mrs. Devorah Scheiner has fed hundreds of Crown Heights families every Pesach and Tishrei, providing truckloads of chicken, gefilte fish, salmon, yogurt, juice, milk, cheese, and produce.
To sustain this ever growing, ever expanding endeavor, Mrs. Scheiner must raise a bi-annual sum of $70,000 ($140,000 annually). That’s a challenging sum for anyone to raise, let alone a person recovering from illness and surgery.
Inspired by her recent interview on COLlive.com, the Charidy team has made a sizeable donation toward making this Tishrei’s food distribution a reality.
As a Crown Heights based organization, Charidy’s team members felt called upon to do something with direct impact for the hundreds of fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters within the community, ensuring that no Crown Heights family goes hungry this yom tov season.
“When we heard her recount her inspiration, her mother’s adage, ‘As long as you’re alive, do everything you can to help others’ — that was the moment we knew we had to do something,” said Yehuda Kirsh, an Executive Fundraising Specialist at Charidy. “We believe in her work. And we believe that even one person can make a difference in the lives of hundreds.”
After sitting down with Mrs. Scheiner, the team was moved by the sensitivity she displays when conducting her services. Many of the families who will be visiting her doorstep this morning could easily feel embarrassed by the situation, but she greets everyone, even newcomers, warmly, inviting them to partake of a special breakfast spread of bagels, danishes and coffee.
“A very big, heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Charidy team for helping with this big mitzvah for distributing food to families for yom tov,” Mrs. Scheiner thanked this morning before greeting the families at her door.
Even with the assistance of the Charidy team, the fund still requires additional donations to meet the full $70,000 needed for this Tishrei. Time is of the essence. Please be generous and donate here.
keep up the good work! Dani.
