Chanukah lighting on Jerusalem’s prestigious Mamilla Avenue has by now become a fixture in the Jerusalem calendar and this year of Hakhel has started with a great attendance and joyful spirit, despite the current security situation in Jerusalem.
It began with joyous dancing accompanied by The Portnoy Brothers band. Professor Yonatan Halevi, Director of Shaarei Tzedek hospital was guest of honor. Doughnuts followed as well as more happy dancing. Smiles were abound and the festive spirit, palpable.
The second night was dedicated to Friendship Circle of Central Jerusalem’s dedicated volunteers and children and to all people with special needs.
Ambassador to the USA, M. K. Michael Oren was the Guest of Honor. He welcomed Friendship Circle, Keren Or and the cheering crowd and reminded them that Chanukah celebrates the Jewish people’s strength and determination in overcoming physical and spiritual challenges, in never giving up and trusting in Hashem. This was a message that had great meaning for all the children and people who struggles daily with their challenges.
“Isn’t it amazing that due to the struggles and triumphs of our nation all through history, we can now stand on Mamilla Avenue with Jewish pride today?” said the Ambassador. “And children with special needs are triumphing each and every day,” he said.
Oren lit the Menorah, sang Maoz Tzur with a choir of boys with special needs and was moved to tears.
The Friendship Circle of Central Jerusalem’s children, led by their directors, Talbiya Shluchim Chanie and Eli Canterman, erupted in dancing to the tunes played by music artist Leibele Lipsker.
A riveting fire eating show followed and the flames of the Menorah radiated warmth that kept the crowd lingering and dancing way over the event was scheduled to end. What a memorable evening!

The Cantermans should go from strength to strength. What a beautiful event! The Menorah is one of a kind!
