The first night of Chanukah was celebrated first down under in Sydney, Australia, with Shul lightings, events and public Menorah lightings.
The first night of Chanukah, the Shul at Chabad Headquarters NSW, Bondi Junction, Australia, joined for the lighting of the Menorah.
At Sydney Shul, Rabbi Chaim Levy lit the first Chanukah candle.
The Shul’s Chanukah celebrations will continue with 15,000 gifts being packaged for children in hospitals around Australia, joined by sports star Tomer Hemed.
Hundreds of people attended a joyous event to celebrate the first night of Chanukah at Hollis Park in Newtown; in Sydney’s inner west.
The event was co-hosted by Newtown Synagogue and Young Adult Chabad and featured a range of children’s entertainment including face painting, dreidel balloons, tug of war and a magic show by “Mr Tim”.
Revelers enjoyed the traditional Chanukah delights such as jam donuts, potato Latkes and chocolate coins and were provided with take-home Chanukah kits consisting of tin Menorahs, candles and colorful dreidels.
The Grand Menorah was kindled by Rabbi Eli Feldman. Rebbetzin Elka Feldman shared inspirational insights into the relevance of Chanukah’s message to our lives today. A highlight of the event was when Lachlan Menzies, Immediate Past President of Newtown Synagogue, played Maoz Tzur on the bagpipes!
Dover Heights Shule, led by Rabbi Motti Feldman, held their annual Chanukah in the Park, the first post-Covid lockdown large Jewish event in Sydney, Australia.
Close to 2000 people participated in the event held in Dudley page reserve in Dover Heights.
