Thousands of people from the Melbourne Jewish community of all ages and backgrounds, gathered on Sunday December 29, the fifth night of Chanukah, at the centrally located Caulfield racecourse, to mark Melbourne’s annual Chanukah community celebration. This year it was at the racecourse being a more secure location.
For decades, the Chabad House of Caulfield has been organizing the event under the leadership of Rabbi Yossel Gutnick, which has seen the annual event become Australia’s largest Jewish event, with many thousands of people from all walks of life attending each year.
Revellers from the entire Jewish community and beyond convened on the racecourse grounds in the afternoon, to enjoy the exciting rides and to sit down with family and friends, while enjoying a wide range of offerings from the local Kosher restaurants. Yumi Rosenbaum and his band excited the crowd with lively Jewish music and Chanukah songs, together with singing sensation Sadya Liberow. The kids enjoyed a great play by the Yeshivah gedolah bochurim. Many people put on Tefillin and lots of Menorahs were given out. The CSG and police provided protection throughout the event.
Before dark, the community heard inspirational words from Rabbi Zalman Gutnick, which was followed by greetings from state politicians, Senator James Patterson, MP David Southwick member for Caulfield and Brad Battin Leader of the opposition.
Strong statements were made about the situation in Israel, with prayers for true peace and security in Israel and the whole world and the eradication of evil both spiritually and physically. Prayers were also said for the IDF and the safe return of all Israeli hostages. The event also celebrated Jewish unity and Jewish pride during these trying times.
The huge Menorah was then lit by Rabbi Yehuda Hoch, together with David Southwick.
Following a tradition of decades, the Menorah lighting was followed by a huge fireworks show and lively dancing.
