A joyous ceremony inaugurated the new Chabad center in Bangkok, Thailand, which will serve the thousands of Israeli backpackers and tourists who flock to the Far East throughout the year.
Chabad of Thailand was founded in 1993 with the guidance and blessing of the Rebbe and at the invitation of the local Jewish Community. It has become the central force behind Jewish life there and has overseen an ever-expanding range of Jewish activities across Thailand.
Head Shliach Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor and his wife Mrs. Nechama Kantor initiated educational and social programs that cater to both the local Jewish community and to the significant population of visitors, both on business and for leisure.
Currently, nine Chabad rabbis and several rabbinical students on internships are on hand to assist both residents and transients in all their Jewish needs and wants.
Notable among the Chabad centers is Chabad of Bangkok – Ohr Menachem directed by Rabbi Nechemya and Nechama Dina Wilhelm. This “home away from home” has become a role model for other centers serving Israeli visitors in Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Phuket and other cities and countries.
An estimated 100,000 Israeli citizens pass through Thailand each year, as well as thousands of Jews of other nationalities. While traveling, these Jews are receptive to exploring their roots.
The Shluchim welcome these travelers offering them assistance, guidance, and a listening ear and are skilled at providing a powerful and memorable Jewish experience.
Shabbat and Holiday programs are attended by many hundreds weekly. The Kosher Restaurants that are maintained on-site are priced to be affordable even for a budget traveler.
The new building, generously donated by Jews from Jews of all backgrounds, includes 5 levels and a rooftop for events. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and inauguration includes singing and dancing.
