Students at Chabad Girls Academy (CGA) recently hosted a heartwarming and educational Holocaust Expo, bringing history to life through their passionate research and creative presentations. This event was the culmination of a year-long study on the Holocaust, a journey that began with the students watching Rabbi Nissan Mangel’s powerful testimony and participating in the Paperclip Project, which helped them grasp the immense scale of the tragedy.
The expo was a labor of love, showcasing various Holocaust-related topics with a central focus on resilience. Each student poured their heart into their work, creating detailed displays and presentations that honored the memories of those who lived through these dark times.
Ella Weiss opened the expo with a moving presentation about Anne Frank, a girl her own age. Ella’s connection to Anne’s story made it particularly poignant, as she shared insights into Anne’s life in hiding and the lasting impact of her diary. Ella’s ability to relate Anne’s experiences to her own life brought a personal touch that resonated deeply with her peers and attendees.
Sara Sirota followed with a presentation on Elie Wiesel, highlighting his experiences during and after the Holocaust. Sara also touched on Wiesel’s significant meeting with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, and how it influenced his views on faith and humanity. The story of Wiesel’s resilience and his lifelong mission to bear witness moved everyone present.
Libby Wolf then presented a stark and emotional account of the Holocaust’s devastation. Using statistics and displays of shoes, suitcases, and personal items, Libby illustrated the enormous loss of life. She also shared a deeply personal story about her grandfather’s grandmother, who survived the Holocaust, adding a touching and intimate layer to her presentation.
Baila Veiner offered a unique approach to discussing the horrors of concentration camps, specifically Auschwitz. Through the use of sound, Baila conveyed the indescribable atrocities, arguing that words alone could not capture the depth of suffering. The haunting audio elements created an immersive and powerful experience, leaving a lasting impression on all who listened.
The final presentation by Shira Soffer focused on hope, telling the story of the Exodus 1947 ship. Shira highlighted the journey of Jewish refugees who, after surviving the Holocaust, sought a new life in Israel. Their perseverance and eventual acceptance into Israel symbolized hope and resilience, ending the expo on an uplifting and inspiring note.
Naftaly Sirota, a parent at CGA, praised the event, noting how well the girls decorated and presented, emphasizing the importance of Holocaust education, especially in times of denial and rising antisemitism. He remarked, “Above all, it is most important to find a positive lesson to give us strength to serve Hashem. This education helps us appreciate the good we have and reminds us to strengthen our Yiddishkeit, adding in Torah and Mitzvos, to honor those who suffered and to hasten the coming of Moshiach.”
The expo was not only an academic exercise but also a heartfelt tribute to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. By immersing themselves in this project, the students at CGA developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of remembrance and education in combating intolerance and ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated. Their work highlighted the incredible resilience of those who lived through the Holocaust, showcasing stories of survival, defiance, and the enduring human spirit.
Teachers and visitors were deeply moved by the depth of knowledge and the sensitivity displayed by the students. The Holocaust Expo at Chabad Girls Academy was a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring importance of historical awareness, leaving everyone who attended both educated and inspired.
