First day Rosh Chodesh Elul
The psalm L’Dovid Hashem Ori (Psalm 27) is recited at the end of the morning and afternoon prayers; this special addition is recited throughout the month of Elul and the High Holiday season, until Hoshanah Rabbah (Tishrei 21) – a total of 50 days.
Second day Rosh Chodesh Elul
1. Shofar
The daily shofar sounding of Elul officially begins on the 2nd Rosh Chodesh, it is customary to practice sounding the shofar (ram’s horn) on the 1st Rosh Chodesh, introducing the Elul atmosphere of soul-searching and repentance.
2. Additional three chapters of Tehillim
From When the Tzemach Tzedek was nine years old the Alter Rebbe said to Him: I received from my Rebbe (the Maggid) who received from his Rebbe (the Baal Shem Tov) in the name of his well-known Rebbe that from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur we are to say three chapters of Tehillim every day. Then, on Yom Kippur, thirty six (chapters): Nine before Kol Nidrei, nine before sleeping, nine after Musaf, and nine after Ne’ila. Whoever did not start on the second day of Rosh Chodesh is to start with the Tehillim of the particular day on which he realizes his omission, and complete the missing Tehillim later (Hayom Yom- 1st of Elul).
