A group of Chabad bochurim were attacked Monday evening on the New York City subway as they were returning from a Chanukah mivtzoim outing in Manhattan. The bochurim quickly exited at the nearest station and immediately ran to a nearby police station. Police have opened an investigation.
The incident occurred while the group was traveling back toward Crown Heights from the Union Square Station to Kingston Avenue. During the ride, two Black men approached them and violently assaulted them. One of the men can be seen choking one of the bochurim on video footage. The attackers also shouted antisemitic slurs and curses at the bochurim.
The bochurim hurried off the train at the closest station and went straight to a nearby police station, where they filed a complaint and called for assistance.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is currently investigating the incident.
One of the bochurim who was attacked recounted:
“We went out on mivtzoim in Manhattan, a few hours of light and joy of the Chanukah holiday. Then we boarded the No. 3 train from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Two African Americans boarded, apparently a father and son, and began hurling horrific antisemitic curses and insults at Jews.
I immediately took out my phone and began recording them, both to deter them and so it could serve as evidence for the police. When the son realized I was filming, he physically attacked me, as can be seen in the video that my friend filmed.
One stop before Crown Heights, we fled the train in fear. No one helped us. No one stood up or blocked the attackers. The son who attacked me gestured a gun to his head, and when I realized how dangerous it was, I quickly put my phone in my pocket. But the camera was still recording.”

Unfortunately nothing will happen to the two black men. The incident will just get put in a pile of many other antisemitic incidents in NYC bc NY has poor leadership as is and its only going to get worst in 15 days. It’s not easy standing up to bullies and thugs. ultimately if many strangers in the subway voiced their opinions and got involved, thuggery would stop. but i know that doing so is scary. what if the thugs are big and strong. what if they have blades or worse. it requires a willingness to get hurt, to stop the thuggery. bravery. I can’t demand it. I don’t know if I would do it. But i know that’s what’s necessary to stop this.
Given the circumstances, they handled it extremely well.
This is not a movie, they can’t do magic tricks. It would have gotten real messy in a tightly enclosed space, very quickly. The aggressors are clearly unhinged and unpredictable. De-escalation in this situation was the best solution.
Unless of course they knew Kung Fu like Bruce Lee and could KO those thugs with elegant leg swings.
